Abby Elliott Files for Divorce From Producer Husband Bill Kennedy After Nine Years

The Abby Elliott divorce filing became official Friday, ending a marriage that lasted nearly ten years.

The Bear star, 39, filed to end her marriage to producer Bill Kennedy, 41, according to court documents entered in Los Angeles on July 17 and obtained by PEOPLE. TMZ first reported the news.

What the Filing Says

Elliott cited irreconcilable differences, the standard California grounds for dissolution.

She listed the date of separation as July 8 — a little over a week before the paperwork was filed.

The couple married on Sept. 8, 2016, putting them roughly two months short of a decade together as spouses.

Custody and Financial Requests

Elliott is seeking joint legal and physical custody of the couple’s two children.

She has also requested spousal support, asked the court to terminate its authority to award spousal support to Kennedy, and requested that he cover her attorney’s fees.

That combination of requests is fairly common in filings where one party has been the primary earner, though the specifics of any financial arrangement will be worked out through the proceedings.

Representatives for both Elliott and Kennedy did not immediately respond to PEOPLE’s request for comment.

The Children

The couple has two children: daughter Edith, 5, and son William, 3.

Both were born after a difficult path to parenthood that Elliott has spoken about publicly.

A Candid Account of IVF

In December 2025, Elliott appeared with her children on the cover of Parents magazine, where she discussed the fertility treatment that made their family possible.

She described a process that never worked naturally. After testing at a clinic, she and Kennedy were told to proceed directly to IVF — specifically ICSI, a procedure in which sperm is injected directly into the egg.

Elliott framed that early clarity as a mercy rather than a setback, saying the information saved them considerable time and emotional strain by eliminating years of unsuccessful attempts.

She was equally direct about the toll the process took.

When embryos were confirmed, she described genuine excitement and readiness to proceed with a transfer. But she also acknowledged that IVF effectively became her full-time occupation, and that she allowed every development in the process to determine her mood and wellbeing.

She described the particular difficulty of holding hope while knowing it might not hold — being encouraged by positive news while remaining aware of how many people go through the same steps without a successful outcome.

That kind of public candour about fertility treatment remains relatively uncommon, and Elliott’s account resonated with readers navigating the same process.

Who They Are

Elliott is a Saturday Night Live alum currently known for her role on The Bear, one of the most acclaimed series of recent years.

She comes from a family with deep comedy roots — her father is Chris Elliott, and her broader family tree includes significant SNL connections.

Kennedy works as a producer.

What Happens Next

California divorces involving minor children typically move through custody arrangements, financial disclosure, and either negotiated settlement or court determination.

Elliott’s request for joint legal and physical custody suggests a co-parenting arrangement rather than a contested custody fight, though filings represent opening positions rather than final outcomes.

Neither party has made any public statement beyond the court documents themselves.

A Note on Coverage

Divorce filings become public records, which is why the details appear in press coverage within hours of submission.

What’s worth remembering is that the documents capture a legal process, not the full picture of a family. Two young children are at the centre of this, and the version that appears in court paperwork reflects requests and procedural requirements rather than the substance of what a decade-long marriage was.
