Rare Extremely Critical Fire Warning Blankets the Pacific Northwest for the First Time Since 2020

Extreme fire danger is expected across the eastern half of Oregon and much of Washington on Saturday as a dry cold front sweeps through, bringing strong westerly winds into a landscape where fuels are already dangerously parched.

Forecasters are using language they rarely reach for. The combination arriving this weekend is severe enough that several weather offices have issued warnings for the first time ever, and the Storm Prediction Center has assigned its highest fire weather category to a portion of the region.

Where the Warnings Apply

Three zones fall under the alerts issued for Saturday.

Zone 700 covers portions of Deschutes County, taking in Bend and Redmond, all of Crook County including Prineville, and parts of Jefferson County including Madras.

Zone 691 covers the Lower Columbia River Basin, encompassing Pendleton, Boardman and Rufus.

Zone 696 covers sections of Wheeler and Grant counties, including John Day.

Storm Tracker 2 Digital Meteorologist Bobby Corser noted that these specific warnings have never been issued by those offices before. He explained that powerful westerly winds combining with exceptionally low relative humidity will produce conditions capable of driving rapid fire growth across the area.

Two Tiers of Risk

The Storm Prediction Center has drawn its risk map with two levels across the region.

All of central and eastern Oregon sits under a critical risk designation, indicating conditions conducive to fires spreading quickly once ignited.

A smaller area has been elevated to extremely critical, the highest of the three categories the agency uses. That zone covers central and eastern Washington, parts of north-central Oregon and the northern reaches of the Lower Columbia River Basin.

The last time the Pacific Northwest carried an extremely critical designation was 7 September 2020, the day the Labor Day fires exploded across Oregon. That comparison alone conveys the seriousness of Saturday’s outlook.

Why the Upgrade Was Issued

The Storm Prediction Center explained its reasoning directly. Several large wildfires are already burning in the affected region, and energy release component values are approaching or surpassing the 95th percentile.

For readers unfamiliar with the term, the energy release component is a measure of how much heat a fire would generate given the current dryness of available fuel. Readings above the 95th percentile mean vegetation is drier than it is on all but a handful of days in the historical record.

Layering a wind event on top of fuels in that condition is what pushed the forecast into the highest category.

The Wind Forecast

A dry cold front will cross the region, and its passage will bring sustained westerly winds rather than isolated gusts.

Most locations east of the Cascades can expect sustained winds between 20 and 30 mph
Gusts near 40 mph are widely anticipated
Some areas may see gusts reaching 45 mph

Winds in that range affect fire behaviour in more ways than simply pushing flames forward. They carry embers well ahead of the main fire, starting new ignitions that firefighters may not reach in time. They also make aerial suppression difficult or impossible, removing one of the most effective tools available.

The Operational Assessment

The Northwest Interagency Coordination Center, which coordinates firefighting resources across the region, issued a blunt assessment of what Saturday could bring.

The agency described a critical burn environment developing on the east side as strong winds meet extremely dry fuels, raising the probability of extreme fire behaviour and substantial growth on any active incident. It went further, characterising Saturday as having the potential to be a high impact fire day with major concerns about rapid spread and broad safety issues.

That last phrase deserves attention. Safety concerns in this context extend beyond firefighters to residents who may have very little time to evacuate if a fire starts near a populated area.

What Residents Should Consider

In conditions like these, the margin between a small ignition and a major incident can be measured in minutes. Practical steps for anyone in the affected zones:

Avoid any activity capable of producing sparks, including equipment use, welding and vehicles parked over dry grass
Do not tow chains that can drag on pavement
Keep vehicles fuelled and important documents accessible
Know at least two routes away from home
Sign up for county emergency alerts if not already enrolled

Dragging chains and hot exhaust systems are among the most common ignition sources during wind events, and both are entirely preventable.

The Broader Picture

The presence of active fires before this wind event arrives is the element that concerns fire managers most. Suppression crews are already committed, and a front of this strength can transform a contained perimeter into an uncontrolled run in a single afternoon.

Extreme fire danger of this magnitude does not appear often in the Pacific Northwest, and the six-year gap since the last extremely critical designation reflects how unusual the alignment of factors has become. Whether Saturday produces a major incident depends substantially on whether anything ignites, which is why the emphasis from every agency involved has fallen on prevention rather than response.
