The Wisconsin governor primary remained unresolved late into the night, with Democratic socialist state Assemblymember Francesca Hong and Milwaukee County Executive David Crowley separated by roughly 3,000 votes and tens of thousands of ballots still uncounted.

Crowley held the narrow lead. The outcome may rest entirely on absentee ballots from Milwaukee County that could not be reported on schedule.

A Technical Error Stalls the Count

At least 28,000 absentee ballots in Milwaukee faced a reporting delay of an hour or more, according to the Associated Press.

Milwaukee Election Commission Director Paulina Gutierrez explained the cause: audit logs rather than ballot results had been uploaded onto flash drives.

The problem was administrative rather than substantive, but its timing gave it outsized importance. In a race with a margin around 3,000 votes, a batch nearly ten times that size can decide everything.

Milwaukee’s composition adds to the uncertainty. It is Crowley’s political home base as county executive, yet it is also urban territory where Hong’s coalition has performed well. Neither campaign could confidently predict which way the outstanding ballots would break.

Both Campaigns Wait

The Crowley camp signalled patience rather than premature celebration.

An aide said Representative Gwen Moore, who has endorsed Crowley, spoke to supporters in Milwaukee and told them the campaign planned to wait longer into the night. No immediate plans were made for Crowley himself to address the crowd.

That restraint reflected the reality of the situation. Declaring victory before the Milwaukee batch arrived would have been reckless with a lead this thin.

What the Race Represented

The contest carried significance well beyond Wisconsin.

Hong represents the progressive and democratic socialist wing that has posted a string of primary victories this year. Crowley entered as the candidate backed by the Democratic Party establishment.

Wisconsin mattered more than earlier tests because it is a genuine swing state rather than safe Democratic territory. Previous progressive wins came largely in reliably blue cities and districts, where the primary effectively determines the general election. Here, whoever emerges faces a competitive November contest.

Minnesota Delivers a Clearer Verdict

While Wisconsin waited, Minnesota produced decisive results.

Lieutenant Governor Peggy Flanagan won the Democratic Senate nomination, defeating a centrist opponent in what became the latest proxy battle over the party’s direction following 2024.

In the gubernatorial primary, Senator Amy Klobuchar captured the Democratic nomination comfortably. She will face Minnesota House Speaker Lisa Demuth, who defeated MyPillow founder Mike Lindell on the Republican side.

Lindell’s loss carried its own message about the current limits of certain endorsements and the weight of a candidate’s accumulated legal and financial troubles.

South Carolina Heads to a Runoff

The Republican Senate primary in South Carolina produced no outright winner.

Senator Darline Graham, appointed to the seat following the death of her brother, Senator Lindsey Graham, qualified for an August 25 runoff as she seeks a full term.

CNN projects she will face Representative Ralph Norman in that contest.

Runoffs frequently reshape races. Voters who supported eliminated candidates redistribute their support, turnout typically drops, and the dynamics of a two-person contest differ substantially from a crowded field. An appointed incumbent forced into a runoff is not in a commanding position.

What the Night Suggests

Taken together, the results point in several directions at once.

Minnesota showed a progressive candidate winning cleanly in a state that leans Democratic. Wisconsin showed a much tighter contest in genuinely competitive territory, which is precisely the test progressives have been asked to pass.

The Wisconsin margin, whichever way it lands, tells a more complicated story than a decisive result would have. A near-tie means neither faction can claim the state validated its theory of how Democrats should win.

The Bigger Picture on Election Administration

The Milwaukee delay is worth noting beyond its effect on one race.

A flash drive containing the wrong files held up results in a contest that may be decided by a fraction of a percentage point. No allegation of misconduct accompanied the error, and officials identified and disclosed the problem promptly.

But it illustrates how thin the margin between routine and consequential can be in close elections. Procedural mistakes that would pass unnoticed in a blowout become the entire story when the outcome hinges on the affected ballots.
