Polish pilgrimage bus crash on a Hungarian motorway has left twelve people dead and dozens injured after the coach left the road and overturned in the early hours of Sunday morning.

The vehicle was carrying Catholic pilgrims home to Poland at the end of a religious journey when the accident occurred.

What Happened on the M3

Police say the bus departed the M3 motorway and rolled at approximately 1:00 a.m. Sunday. The route connects Budapest with Nyíregyháza in the country’s northeast.

Officers have indicated that the driver may have fallen asleep at the wheel, though the investigation remains at an early stage.

According to Hungarian news agency MTI, the coach was carrying 57 passengers along with two drivers.

A Difficult Rescue Operation

The recovery effort presented significant physical challenges for emergency crews.

MTI reported that responders initially attempted to raise the rear axle of the 24-ton vehicle in order to free people trapped beneath it. That work continued until cranes arrived capable of lifting the entire bus.

Operations of this kind are agonisingly slow by necessity. Lifting a vehicle of that weight without shifting it unpredictably requires careful positioning, and every minute matters for anyone pinned underneath.

Hungarian Interior Minister Gábor Pósfai confirmed twelve fatalities, adding that several of the injured remain in serious condition.

The driver was taken into custody, standard procedure in fatal transport incidents where criminal liability may be assessed.

Hungarian Prime Minister Péter Magyar said on Facebook that he had spoken by telephone with Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk to convey condolences to the Polish people following what he described as a terrible night-time bus accident.

The Journey They Were Returning From

The group had been travelling home from Medjugorje in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
