Morgan Murphy, a former official in Trump’s White House, explained that British authorities are leading the probe, with American law enforcement and intelligence agencies providing support.

In his view, investigators will leave nothing unchecked. Phone data, bank records and even rental paperwork will be combed through by intelligence teams from both countries. If a connection to Tehran exists, he believes it will come to light.

Because American airmen and aircraft appear to have been the intended target, Murphy expects several US agencies to join the effort, including:

• Air Force investigators stationed at the base
• FBI personnel working out of London
• The wider American intelligence community

He added that if solid proof emerges tying Iran to the attempt, it will be the President who decides what consequences Tehran faces.

Signs of a Sophisticated Operation

Andrew Badger, a former Defense Intelligence Agency official, believes the size of the group points to careful planning. With five people involved and three vans reportedly present at the scene, he said the incident did not resemble the work of an amateur or a lone individual acting on impulse.

Badger described one possible scenario. A vehicle packed with explosives could have been detonated at the front gate, allowing the other vans to push onto the base and go after the bombers themselves. He also warned that such an attack could have caused harm well beyond the airfield’s fences, putting nearby communities at risk.

In his assessment, the incident is likely to prompt tighter security at US installations not only in Britain and across Europe, but around the world.

Why Fairford Matters So Much

RAF Fairford is far from an ordinary airfield. It is the base from which the United States operates its strategic bombers for Europe and other global missions, making it one of the most valuable American military assets on the continent.

Its importance has grown considerably during the conflict with Iran. The UK government had earlier permitted US forces to use Fairford, along with Diego Garcia in the Indian Ocean, for limited defensive missions. These included destroying Iranian missiles and launch sites before they could be used.

That decision drew a sharp reaction from Tehran. Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps declared that any base used to strike Iranian territory would be considered a legitimate target for its forces.

A local councilor revealed that the base had received a specific threat from Iran around six weeks before the arrests. Surveillance around the area was stepped up at the time, suggesting authorities were already on high alert well before Sunday’s events.

Iran Is Not the Only Possible Culprit

Despite the attention on Tehran, Badger urged caution against drawing quick conclusions. He acknowledged that Iran might be trying to strengthen its hand in negotiations, or to punish Washington for walking away from talks, but stressed that nothing has been confirmed.

He highlighted other actors who could be involved:

• Russia, which has been accused of running a campaign of hybrid and gray zone attacks across Europe
• Islamic extremist groups, which continue to pose a serious danger inside the UK

The Overlooked Target: RAF Welford

Badger also raised concerns about RAF Welford, a major US ammunition storage facility that primarily supports operations at Fairford. He noted that it ranks as the second-largest weapons and munitions depot in Europe, and said it could easily have been on the list of potential targets as well.

Security Tightens Across Europe

Military sites across Europe, including those operated by the US and its allies, were already running at a raised level of alert before the arrests. Badger expects that posture to become even stricter, with more frequent patrols and closer monitoring of anyone approaching these facilities.

There are also reports that RAF Fairford has been moved to Delta alert, the highest level of security used within the military base system.

So far, British authorities have not publicly identified who they believe was behind the plan, and no motive has been announced. Even so, the arrests have raised uncomfortable questions about how vulnerable American bases abroad may be, particularly during a period of heightened tension with Iran.
