Mother and Daughter Found Dead in Suspected Grizzly Bear Attack in British Columbia

A mother and daughter, identified as Jennifer Balcarras, 48, and Selah Reed, 20, are believed to have been killed in a suspected grizzly bear attack while walking on a trail in Bella Coola, British Columbia. The tragic incident has prompted an investigation by the B.C. Conservation Officer Service, which plans to use DNA testing on local bears to identify the animal involved.

The victims were reported missing on November 1, 2026, and their bodies were discovered nearly a mile apart near the Snooka West Trail over the following two days. Balcarras’ body was found on November 2, 2026, and Reed’s body was located on November 3, 2026.

Conservation officers have stated that they may capture and dispatch bears if DNA testing determines that they were involved in the attack. The investigation is ongoing, and officials have not yet determined how the suspected attack occurred or if more than one bear was involved.

Grizzly bear attacks on humans are relatively rare, but they can be fatal when they do occur. Bella Coola, located on the central coast of British Columbia, is known for its wilderness and wildlife, including a significant population of grizzly bears.

The B.C. Conservation Officer Service is working to gather more information about the incident and to ensure public safety in the area. They may issue warnings or close trails temporarily while the investigation continues and until the bear or bears responsible for the attack are identified and dealt with.

The loss of Jennifer Balcarras and Selah Reed is a tragic event that has undoubtedly left their family, friends, and the local community in shock and mourning. As the investigation unfolds, it serves as a reminder of the importance of being cautious and prepared when venturing into wilderness areas where wild animals, such as grizzly bears, are present.
