US Judge Releases Jeffrey Epstein’s Purported Suicide Note After Years Under Seal

US Judge Releases Jeffrey Epstein’s Purported Suicide Note After Years Under Seal

Reader note: This article discusses suicide and may be distressing for some readers.

Jeffrey Epstein’s suicide note has resurfaced in the public eye after a US federal judge ordered its release this week. The handwritten document, said to have been written about a month before the convicted sex offender died in custody in 2019, has been the subject of speculation for years. Now, with its unsealing, the public is getting a rare glimpse into a piece of evidence that had been locked away in court records for a long time.

While the note has finally been made public, the BBC and other major outlets have stressed that they have not independently verified that Epstein actually wrote it. US authorities have so far stayed quiet on the matter, leaving room for continued debate about its authenticity and meaning.

What the Note Says

The handwritten note is short, just seven lines long, but its contents have already drawn intense attention. In one line, it reads: “They investigated me for month – FOUND NOTHING!!!” It also makes reference to charges that were years old at the time.

Another part of the note reads, “It is a treat to be able to choose one’s time to say goodbye.” A line further down says, “Watcha want me to do – Bust out cryin!! NO FUN – NOT WORTH IT.”

Because the note is so brief and informal, it has left readers, journalists, and investigators with more questions than answers. Was it really a farewell letter? Was it a moment of frustration? Or something else entirely? The court document offers no definitive interpretation.

How the Note Was Discovered

According to Epstein’s former cellmate, Nicholas Tartaglione, the note was tucked inside a book. Tartaglione says he came across it after Epstein attempted to take his own life in July 2019. Just one month later, Epstein was found dead in his cell at a federal facility in New York. Authorities ruled the death a suicide, although that conclusion has been challenged repeatedly over the years.

Tartaglione is no ordinary witness. He is a former police officer who was later convicted of four murders. At the time he shared a cell with Epstein, he was awaiting trial for those killings. Epstein had once accused Tartaglione of attacking him, a claim Tartaglione denied. He first mentioned the existence of the note publicly last year during a podcast appearance.

Why the Note Was Sealed for So Long

The document had been kept under seal as part of the criminal proceedings against Tartaglione. It was originally submitted to the court back in May 2021 by John A. Wieder, who was Tartaglione’s lawyer at the time. Wieder described it as “the original document” that federal Judge Kenneth M. Karas had requested be turned over to the court.

The New York Times eventually petitioned Judge Karas, based in White Plains, New York, to unseal the note, arguing that there was no longer any reason to keep it hidden from the public. Federal prosecutors agreed, saying that the original justification for sealing the note had weakened, especially after Tartaglione publicly spoke about it on the podcast.

The Judge’s Ruling

In his decision, Judge Karas wrote that the note “is subject to the presumption of public access.” He added that releasing it would help ensure that the public retains “confidence in the administration of justice” and would also bring a measure of accountability to a case that has been clouded with controversy.

The judge also noted that Tartaglione’s repeated public statements about the note effectively waived any attorney-client privilege that might have justified keeping it sealed. With those legal protections no longer in place, there was little reason to keep the document hidden.

The DOJ’s Position

The US Department of Justice has not yet responded to fresh media questions about the note. Earlier, however, a DOJ spokesperson told NBC News that the department had not previously seen the document. The same spokesperson highlighted the department’s “exhaustive effort” in collecting and releasing millions of pages of other Epstein-related material in recent months.

This points to a wider tension in the case: while massive amounts of information have been released, key questions about Epstein’s final days remain unanswered.

Lingering Questions About Epstein’s Death

Epstein’s death came as he was awaiting trial on serious sex-trafficking charges. The circumstances of that night have been examined repeatedly. A federal report identified clear security failures at the prison, including issues with cell checks and surveillance cameras. Those failures, combined with Epstein’s high-profile status and powerful connections, have fuelled years of speculation and conspiracy theories about whether his death was truly a suicide.

The release of this note may not settle those debates. If anything, the limited and ambiguous content of the seven-line message could intensify them. Some will see the note as confirmation that Epstein wished to end his life on his own terms. Others will view it as too vague to draw conclusions from.

Why This Release Matters

For the public, the unsealing of this note represents another step toward transparency in a case that has captivated and disturbed people around the world. It signals a willingness by the courts to revisit sealed material when the original reasons for secrecy no longer apply. Whether or not the note was truly written by Epstein, its public release is a reminder that the full story of his life, crimes, and death is still unfolding.

As more documents continue to surface, the Epstein case shows no sign of fading from public attention. Each new revelation, however small, adds another layer to one of the most controversial criminal cases in recent American history.
