Eurovision 2026 Winner DARA Faces Scrutiny Over Song’s Kremlin-Linked Co-Writer

The Eurovision 2026 winner DARA delivered a historic moment for Bulgaria, securing the country’s first-ever victory at the contest. Yet the triumph quickly became the subject of intense discussion — not because of the performance itself, but because of who helped write the winning song and a series of past associations now drawing scrutiny.

Bulgarian singer DARA took the top prize with “Bangaranga,” but the celebration has been accompanied by questions about the song’s creative team and the artist’s own social media history.

A Historic Win for Bulgaria

By the official numbers, DARA’s victory was decisive. According to Eurovision organizers, she received 516 points in the final, including 312 points from viewers — a strong public mandate that delivered Bulgaria its first Eurovision win in the nation’s history.

For a country that had never claimed the title before, it was a landmark achievement. But the spotlight soon shifted from the result to the background of the people behind the entry.

The Co-Writer at the Center of the Story

Much of the attention has focused on Greek composer Dimitris Kontopoulos, who is credited by Eurovision as one of the writers of “Bangaranga.”

Kontopoulos is a familiar name in Eurovision circles, with a track record that includes several entries for Russia. His past work includes:

  • “You Are the Only One,” Russia’s 2016 entry performed by Sergey Lazarev
  • “Scream,” Russia’s 2019 entry, also for Lazarev
  • “Shine,” Russia’s 2014 entry performed by the Tolmachevy Sisters

Many of those projects were developed alongside Russian singer Philipp Kirkorov, a prominent public supporter of Russian leader Vladimir Putin who played a significant role in Russia’s Eurovision campaigns for years. Kontopoulos has long been associated with a Eurovision songwriting collective unofficially nicknamed the “Dream Team” by fans, a group that produced entries for Russia and several other countries throughout the 2010s.

Reported Ties After 2022

The scrutiny goes beyond Kontopoulos’s earlier work. According to information circulating online after the Eurovision final, the composer also appeared to maintain connections with the Russian entertainment industry following Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022.

Social media users pointed to an Instagram story reportedly posted by Kontopoulos from Moscow’s Live Arena on October 19, 2025, during a concert involving Sergey Lazarev and Kirkorov. Additional photographs and videos shared from his Instagram account reportedly showed appearances in Moscow and on Red Square in the period after the invasion began.

His professional history in the region stretches back further still. Kontopoulos previously worked with Ukrainian-born singer Ani Lorak, who continued her career in Russia after 2014. Between 2008 and 2009, Lorak recorded material for her album “Solntse” at Kontopoulos’s VOX Recording Studios in Athens, where he served as songwriter and producer while Kirkorov acted as executive producer.

It’s worth noting that these reports are largely based on material circulating on social media following the contest, and the article does not present independent verification of every claim.

Questions Around DARA Herself

The winning artist has not been entirely outside the conversation either.

Screenshots circulating online indicated that DARA — whose real name is Darina Yotova — published an Instagram post in December 2025 featuring a large illuminated “Z” symbol. Since 2022, the letter “Z” has been widely used as a symbol associated with Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and Russian military propaganda, which is why the post drew particular attention after her win.

Claims of Involvement in the Stage Production

Adding another layer to the story, videos circulated online after the final showing Kirkorov discussing Bulgaria’s Eurovision performance. In those clips, he claimed that his team had taken part in preparing DARA’s stage production.

So far, those claims remain unaddressed. Neither DARA nor Bulgaria’s public broadcaster BNT has publicly commented on Kirkorov’s statements regarding alleged involvement in the performance. As a result, the extent of any such participation remains unclear and unconfirmed.

A Contest Already Debating Russia’s Place

The controversy lands at a sensitive moment for Eurovision, which has continued to grapple with questions about Russia’s relationship to the contest.

Earlier, British lawmakers criticized Eurovision director Martin Green after he suggested that Russia could, in theory, return to the competition if a Russian broadcaster could demonstrate independence from the Kremlin — a comment that drew pushback given the ongoing war against Ukraine.

Against that backdrop, a winning entry connected to figures with past Russian Eurovision ties was always likely to generate debate.

The Bottom Line

DARA’s victory at Eurovision 2026 is, on paper, a clear and historic success for Bulgaria, backed by a substantial points total and strong support from viewers across Europe.

But the win has become inseparable from the conversation surrounding it. The involvement of a co-writer with an extensive history of Russian Eurovision entries, reports of his continued ties to the Russian entertainment scene, DARA’s own social media post, and unconfirmed claims about the stage production have all combined to keep the focus on questions rather than the music.

For now, many of these threads remain unverified or unaddressed by the artist and her broadcaster — leaving Bulgaria’s first Eurovision triumph wrapped in a debate that shows little sign of fading.
