Zendaya’s Mom Breaks Silence on Emotional Euphoria Finale: “I’m Gonna Keep My Thoughts to Myself”
Warning: This article contains spoilers for the Euphoria season 3 finale, now streaming on HBO Max.
The Euphoria finale has left fans reeling, and one of the most quietly poignant reactions came from someone with a deeply personal connection to the show: Zendaya’s mother. After the series wrapped its emotional final episode, Claire Stoermer offered a brief, cryptic response that captured the heaviness many viewers felt watching her daughter’s character reach the end of her story.
A Mother’s Quiet Reaction
On Monday, June 1, Stoermer took to her Instagram Stories to acknowledge the flood of responses she’d received following the finale, which aired on HBO the night before.
She kept her message short and deliberately understated. She noted that her DMs were filled with messages about the previous night’s episode, then chose restraint over revelation. She said she would keep her thoughts to herself, admitting the episode definitely made her sad, along with stirring other emotions, before deciding to simply leave it there.
It was a fittingly tender response from a parent who has watched her daughter grow alongside the role that helped define her career.
How the Story Ends for Rue
The finale delivered a heartbreaking conclusion for Rue Bennett, the troubled protagonist Zendaya has played since the series premiered in 2019. In the closing episode, Rue overdoses on laced pills given to her by the character Alamo Brown, played by Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje.
In one of the episode’s most devastating choices, Rue appears to share a tender embrace with her mother, only for viewers to learn that the reunion was a dream. Rue is gone.
Series creator Sam Levinson has since confirmed that season 3 marks the show’s final chapter, and he said Rue’s fate felt like the honest ending to the story he set out to tell.
Why Levinson Made This Choice
In a post-episode breakdown, Levinson, 41, explained the reasoning behind Rue’s death, framing it as a hard truth rather than a tragedy for its own sake.
He spoke about the reality that people struggling as Rue does often don’t make it, that relapse is common, and that many simply aren’t ready to get clean. He pointed in particular to how the influx of fentanyl has made addiction far deadlier than in years past. Reflecting on his own experiences, Levinson said he doubted he would have survived what he went through in his youth if he’d faced it under today’s conditions.
He also tied the ending to a real and painful loss. Levinson dedicated the conclusion to his late co-star Angus Cloud, who played Fezco and who died of an accidental overdose at age 25. Cloud appears briefly in the finale through never-before-seen footage.
In an interview on the New York Times’ Popcast, Levinson called the ending a tragic one but also the truth, describing it as a way of honoring Cloud and offering a prayer for the future. For a story fundamentally about addiction and its consequences, he said, this felt like the only real way to close it.
A Career-Defining Role
Zendaya’s portrayal of Rue has earned her two Emmy Awards since the show began. The actress, now 29, won Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series in both 2020 and 2022, becoming the youngest person ever to claim the award after her first win.
In the season’s behind-the-scenes breakdown, Zendaya delivered an emotional farewell to her colleagues. She thanked the cast and crew, expressing deep gratitude for those who had been there since the beginning and watched her grow up over the years, calling the experience both a pleasure and an honor.
Other Characters’ Fates
Rue wasn’t the only character whose story came to a dramatic close. The season also said goodbye to Nate Jacobs, played by Jacob Elordi, whose mounting money troubles led to a grisly end: buried alive in a coffin and confronted by a rattlesnake.
Elordi, 28, described filming the unsettling scene in surprisingly peaceful terms. He recalled being unable to move his arms inside the cramped coffin as the lid was drilled shut and everything went dark, yet found the experience oddly calming. He even called it a cool way to go, reflecting that it felt right for a character who had made so many dark choices to arrive at such an ending.
The Bottom Line
The Euphoria finale closed the book on a series that consistently pushed boundaries and sparked conversation throughout its run. For viewers, the ending was a gut punch, and for those closest to the show, like Zendaya’s mother, the emotions ran even deeper. Sometimes, as Claire Stoermer suggested, the most heartfelt response is simply to feel it quietly and leave the rest unsaid.
All three seasons of Euphoria are available to stream on HBO Max.
On a more serious note, since this story centers on addiction and overdose: if you or someone you know is struggling with substance use, support is available, and I’m happy to help you find resources if that would be useful.
