The Fairfield graduation shooting left one person dead and three others injured, including a young child, after gunfire erupted Wednesday night at a high school graduation ceremony in Northern California, officials said.
What Happened
According to a spokesperson for the Fairfield Police Department, the shooting unfolded around 7:15 p.m. in the parking lot of Sem Yeto High School’s graduation, which was being held at Fairfield High School, located southwest of Sacramento.
Of the four people struck by gunfire, one was pronounced dead at the scene. The remaining three were transported to area hospitals for treatment, though the severity of their injuries was not immediately known.
Police said the victims spanned a wide range of ages. Among those hospitalized were an 11-year-old child and two adults, ages 20 and 25. The person who died was 18.
A district spokesperson told CBS News Sacramento that the violence broke out after the ceremony had already concluded.
The Search for a Suspect
The hunt for the shooter began quickly. Mayor Alma Hernandez of neighboring Suisun City wrote on Facebook that a search was underway. As of the latest reports, however, no suspect description had been released, and the circumstances behind the shooting remained under investigation.
The Solano County Sheriff’s Office said it was assisting Fairfield police with the case. Authorities urged anyone with information about the incident to come forward and contact Fairfield police.
About the School
Sem Yeto is a continuation high school that shares a physical campus with Fairfield High. Despite the tragedy, the Fairfield-Suisun Unified School District said classes would continue as scheduled through the remainder of the week.
This is a developing story, and many details, including a motive and the identities of those involved, have yet to be confirmed by officials.
