Drones Over St. Petersburg: Ukraine Strikes Deep Into Russia After Putin Snubs Zelenskyy’s Talks Offer

A major Ukraine St. Petersburg drone attack rattled Russia’s second-largest city early Saturday, forcing residents to stay indoors and underscoring Kyiv’s growing capacity to strike deep inside Russian territory. The assault came just one day after President Vladimir Putin flatly rejected an offer from his Ukrainian counterpart to meet for direct talks.

The timing was unmistakable. With diplomacy stalled and the front line frozen, Ukraine appeared to be sending a pointed message far behind enemy lines.

A City on Lockdown

The scale of the attack prompted unusual precautions in St. Petersburg. Governor Alexander Beglov advised residents not to venture outside and warned of possible disruptions to mobile internet service.

The numbers reflected an intense aerial battle. Regional Governor Alexander Drozdenko reported that 141 drones were shot down over the surrounding Leningrad region. Russia’s Defense Ministry put the figure far higher, claiming its air defenses had downed 376 Ukrainian drones in total.

Ukraine Claims a Long-Reach Strike

Zelenskyy himself confirmed and celebrated the operation, emphasizing just how far the drones had traveled. Writing on X, he said Ukrainian drones had covered roughly 1,000 kilometers to reach the St. Petersburg region, targeting the enemy navy’s arsenals and a base in Kronstadt.

Although no casualties were immediately reported, the strike carried significant symbolic weight. It represented yet another embarrassing blow to Putin’s effort to portray the conflict as a distant affair that doesn’t touch the daily lives of ordinary Russians.

A Pattern of Embarrassment

This was not an isolated incident. The renewed assault followed a Ukrainian drone strike on Wednesday that set ablaze an oil terminal in the city and hit a nearby naval base.

The timing of that earlier attack was especially pointed — it came just hours before the opening of the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum, Putin’s annual showcase for attracting investment. The strikes cast a cloud over the high-profile event in Putin’s own hometown.

Speaking at the forum on Thursday, Putin acknowledged the threat, vowing that Russia would strengthen its air defenses to counter the Ukrainian drone attacks that have increasingly reached deep inside the country.

Putin Rejects the Olive Branch

The military escalation unfolded against a backdrop of failed diplomacy. On Friday, Putin rejected Zelenskyy’s proposal for a face-to-face meeting on the four-year-old conflict, declaring that he saw “no point” in it.

Zelenskyy’s overture had come in the form of a letter on Thursday — notably, the first public message he has written directly to Putin since Russia sent troops into Ukraine in 2022. The letter was far from conciliatory. It delivered a sweeping critique of Putin’s 26 years in power and included pointed taunts about the Russian leader’s age.

A War of Long-Range Strikes

With the front line barely shifting, the nature of the conflict has evolved. Swarms of drones have made traditional advances difficult, leaving both sides searching for an edge through long-range strikes deep into each other’s territory.

That dynamic explains the increasingly ambitious reach of Ukraine’s operations — and the continued Russian bombardment of Ukrainian cities far from the front.

Casualties Mount in Ukraine

While St. Petersburg escaped without reported casualties, Ukraine suffered losses overnight as Russia pressed its own attacks. The toll across several regions included:

  • Dnipropetrovsk region — One person killed and three wounded as Russian forces struck three districts nearly 30 times with drones and artillery, according to regional head Oleksandr Hanzha.
  • Zaporizhzhia — Seven people sought medical care after a Russian drone strike sparked a fire at a parking lot, regional head Ivan Fedorov said.

The intensity of Russia’s overnight campaign was considerable. Ukraine’s air force reported that Russia had launched 272 strike drones, of which air defenses shot down 249.

A Conflict With No Clear Exit

The events of the past few days capture the grim stalemate gripping the war. Diplomacy has hit a wall, with Putin dismissing the very idea of sitting down with Zelenskyy. Meanwhile, both nations continue trading devastating long-range blows, each trying to demonstrate resilience and inflict pain far from the contested front.

The repeated strikes on St. Petersburg carry a particular sting for Moscow, puncturing the carefully maintained image of a war safely confined to distant battlefields. As drones travel a thousand kilometers to reach Russia’s cultural capital and Russian missiles continue to fall on Ukrainian towns, the conflict shows every sign of grinding on — with neither side willing to blink and no negotiated path in sight.
