Tragedy on the Skeleton Bridge: Young Brazilian Woman Killed in Catastrophic Bungee Jump Failure

The Brazilian woman bungee jump death that has shocked the world unfolded in a matter of seconds, when a 21-year-old was pushed from a bridge without being attached to a safety cord. The catastrophic failure, allegedly caused by basic negligence, has led to multiple arrests and a homicide investigation in São Paulo state.

What Happened

The tragedy occurred on the morning of Saturday, June 13, at the Ponte do Esqueleto, also known as the “Skeleton Bridge,” in Limeira, São Paulo. The victim, Maria Eduarda Rodrigues de Freitas, had arrived for what was meant to be an exhilarating adventure with her fiancé.

Instead, according to military police, witnesses on the scene reported that the safety equipment was never properly secured to her harness before two men launched her off the platform. She fell a great distance into the ravine below, with reports placing the drop at roughly 35 to 40 meters, and was pronounced dead at the scene from multiple trauma despite bystanders’ attempts at CPR.

A Preventable Mistake

Accounts from the scene paint a picture of a horrifying and avoidable error. Disturbing video footage that later emerged appeared to show instructors carrying Freitas and pushing her from the ledge without the rope attached.

In one of the most chilling details, someone can reportedly be heard shouting “Guys, the rope” in the moments right before she was launched, a desperate realization that came too late. One eyewitness who spoke to CNN Brasil described the incident as the result of basic irresponsibility on the part of the team, noting that three people had jumped before her without the same fatal lapse, and insisting that this was not merely an accident but a failure of something fundamental.

A Day That Began With Excitement

Freitas, a graduate in physical education and sports management from Jandira in Greater São Paulo, had shared her anticipation on social media just hours before. She posted images from the bridge showing the event setup, the equipment, identification bracelets, and other participants safely performing jumps with proper gear.

One Instagram story, posted that morning, captured a banner for the company operating at the site. Alongside it, she wrote a message that has since taken on a heartbreaking weight: “Who was the crazy person that let me jump off a bridge???”

Her fiancé, who accompanied her and witnessed the fall firsthand, was later treated at a nearby hospital for severe emotional distress after becoming ill upon learning of her death.

Arrests and Investigation

The aftermath was chaotic. Some of the organizers reportedly fled the scene shortly after she fell. Authorities later located two who had run off with the help of a police helicopter that searched a patch of woodland next to the bridge.

In total, six people connected to the event were taken into custody, five men and one woman. Reports indicated that three were released following questioning, while the remaining three would be investigated on charges of homicide with implied malice. The Civil Police department is leading the investigation and will determine whether the suspects ultimately face criminal charges.

The companies involved have faced scrutiny as well. The business operating the activity, Entre Cordas, reportedly deleted its social media page, which had around 80,000 followers, after the incident. Men seen in footage from the scene appeared to be wearing shirts linked to that company and another.

Questions Over the Bridge

The tragedy has also sparked a dispute over responsibility for the site itself. The Limeira City Hall announced it would sue the federal government, arguing that oversight of the Skeleton Bridge, including inspection, maintenance, and access control, fell exclusively to federal authorities.

According to the city, it had repeatedly raised concerns. Officials said that since 2025 they had sent official letters to the responsible bodies demanding security measures at the bridge, including requests to block access and install warning signs, suggesting the dangers of the location had been flagged well before the fatal jump.

A Broader Pattern of Risk

While extreme, this is not the first time a missing safety cord has turned an adventure activity into a fatality. Similar tragedies have occurred elsewhere, often stemming from communication failures or lapses in checking equipment, underscoring how completely participants must rely on the instructors charged with their safety.

That element of total trust is part of what has made this case resonate so widely. As footage spread online, viewers reacted with shock and anger, with many emphasizing that jumpers place complete faith in their instructors in those final moments on the ledge.

The Aftermath

For Freitas’s family, friends, and fiancé, a day meant to be a thrilling memory became an unimaginable loss. Her gym, where she worked, posted a message mourning her death, and tributes reflected a young woman who loved outdoor activities and nature.

As the investigation continues, the case stands as a devastating reminder of how a single overlooked step can carry irreversible consequences. The coming weeks will determine what charges, if any, the suspects face, and whether the questions surrounding the bridge’s oversight lead to broader accountability.
