The Darby Township Walmart shooting on Friday evening left a store employee wounded after an argument between two men escalated into gunfire in the middle of a busy retail floor.

Officers responded to the store on North MacDade Boulevard in Delaware County shortly before 8 p.m. Chopper 6 was overhead as the scene developed.

What Investigators Say Happened

According to police, two men became involved in a dispute inside the store. At some point during the exchange, one of them produced a firearm and opened fire, discharging somewhere between five and ten rounds.

A female employee was struck in the calf. She was transported to Penn Presbyterian Medical Center in Philadelphia, where her injuries were described as non-life-threatening.

The shooter left the scene immediately afterward and had not been apprehended by Friday night.

Chaos in the Surrounding Area

The response extended well beyond the Walmart itself. A woman working as a DoorDash driver said she was inside a neighbouring store when police entered.

She described officers arriving with rifles and ordering everyone present to get on the ground. At that moment she had no information about what had occurred. Her reaction afterward was one of frustration as much as fear, saying it had reached the point where ordinary shopping felt impossible and calling the situation ridiculous.

Police confirmed that several people were briefly detained during the initial response, but said those detentions were purely for the purpose of gathering information rather than because anyone was suspected of involvement.

Reaction Among Store Staff

Walmart employees were instructed not to give interviews. Action News did speak with a former employee who had heard about the incident from friends still working at the location.

She said her former colleagues were in shock. Training for this kind of emergency exists, she noted, but preparation does not make anyone expect it will actually happen where they work.

That observation reflects a familiar tension in retail employment. Active shooter drills have become standard across large chains, yet the psychological distance between rehearsing a scenario and living through one remains enormous.

The Official Response

The Delaware County District Attorney’s Office confirmed it is working to identify the person responsible. A spokesperson also sought to reassure residents, stating there is no reason to believe the general public faces ongoing danger.

That assessment suggests investigators view the shooting as arising from a specific dispute between two individuals rather than as a random attack, though the office did not elaborate on what the men were arguing about or whether they knew one another.

The spokesperson said the office’s thoughts were with everyone affected by what was described as a senseless act of violence.

The Person Who Was Actually Hit

One detail stands out in the sequence of events. Neither of the men involved in the confrontation was struck. The only person injured was an employee who had no part in the dispute and was presumably doing her job when the shooting started.

Firing five to ten rounds inside an occupied store creates obvious risk to everyone present. That the injury count stopped at one, and that the wound was to a limb rather than anywhere more serious, is largely a matter of chance.

What Remains Unknown

Police have not released a description of the gunman, identified either man involved, or offered any explanation for what triggered the argument. It is also unclear whether surveillance footage from inside the store has produced usable images.

Whether the two men had any prior connection is another open question, and one that will shape how investigators approach the search.

Darby Township police are asking anyone with information about the incident to contact them directly. Witnesses who were inside the store, or in the parking lot around the time, may have observed details that seemed insignificant at the moment but could assist in identifying the shooter.

For the employee recovering at Penn Presbyterian, the immediate outlook appears positive given the nature of her injury. For the rest of the staff, returning to the same aisles where this happened is likely to be considerably harder.
