China’s decision to sanction New Zealand lawmakers has opened a fresh diplomatic fault line, with Beijing penalizing four members of New Zealand’s Parliament for visiting Taiwan in what it called a violation of the “one-China principle.”
The move risks straining a relationship that has long been warmer than most—New Zealand having historically maintained closer ties with Beijing than its partners in the Five Eyes intelligence-sharing network.
The Sanctions and the Response
The penalties came directly from China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Spokesperson Mao Ning accused the four lawmakers of interfering in China’s internal affairs by traveling to Taiwan, and barred them from entering the country for one year.
Wellington pushed back quickly. Prime Minister Christopher Luxon objected to the decision, calling it “inappropriate,” and said on June 5 that he intended to raise the matter directly in upcoming diplomatic talks with Beijing.
Why It Matters for the Five Eyes
The episode carries implications well beyond a single travel ban. New Zealand’s comparatively close relationship with China has already raised eyebrows among its Five Eyes partners—a network that also includes the United States, Britain, Canada and Australia.
Recent history has added to those concerns:
- In 2025, New Zealand and China clashed in a diplomatic spat over Beijing’s influence in the Cook Islands, a free associate of New Zealand
- That friction highlighted Beijing’s apparent interest in testing the bonds between Wellington and its smaller Pacific partners
- The latest sanctions appear to fit a broader pattern of pressure
Analysts suggest China likely aims to drive wedges on two fronts at once—between New Zealand and the Cook Islands, and between New Zealand and the rest of the Five Eyes alliance.
As Luxon prepares to take the issue to the negotiating table, the sanctions stand as a pointed reminder of how quickly Taiwan can become a flashpoint—and how Beijing is willing to apply pressure even on partners with whom it has traditionally enjoyed relatively smooth relations.
