The aircraft, known as NewsChopper4, was in the air covering breaking news for NBC4 and its Spanish-language sister station Telemundo 52 when it crashed into a parking lot. Ironically, the chopper had been reporting on an earlier tragedy nearby, a collision between an SUV and a Los Angeles Metro bus that had already claimed two lives.

The crash claimed the lives of reporter Eliana Moreno and pilot George Marciniw, both of whom worked for Angel City Air, the same company that operates KTLA’s Sky5 helicopter. A third person, 29-year-old Edy Gutierrez Mejia, was killed on the ground when the helicopter came down, according to officials.

Former KTLA helicopter pilot Tim Lynn spoke about how devastating it feels when tragedy strikes someone within that circle. He recalled his own brush with danger years ago, when a fellow pilot warned him mid-flight that smoke was pouring from his helicopter, a moment that stuck with him as a reminder of how connected these pilots really are.

Lynn had flown alongside Moreno before and knew Marciniw as well. Watching the footage and hearing the audio from the crash, especially Moreno’s voice, left him deeply shaken. He admitted it’s something he won’t be able to shake anytime soon.

Investigators Dig Into What Went Wrong

The National Transportation Safety Board sent a team to the crash site the day after the incident to start piecing together what happened. Their work includes examining the wreckage itself, reviewing maintenance logs, checking weather conditions at the time, and looking into the pilot’s training background.

One of the most valuable pieces of evidence so far comes from NBC4’s own live broadcast, which captured audio and video in the moments right before the crash. NTSB Investigator-in-Charge Fabian Salazar noted that the recording included cockpit warning tones along with sounds that suggested shifts in engine speed. Investigators haven’t pinpointed a cause yet.

Despite rigorous safety protocols and ongoing training requirements, helicopter pilots know that accidents remain a possibility they can never fully rule out. Aviation professional Tim Dechant explained that this fear lingers in the back of every pilot’s mind, even though strict maintenance standards make most people push that worry aside.

James Baker, who co-owns Rogue Aviation, said the tragedy has affected pilots throughout the industry, even those who never personally crossed paths with Moreno or Marciniw. He described the loss as feeling personal simply because it involves people doing the same demanding work they do every day.

Baker also pointed out just how much training news helicopter crews go through, especially given the unique demands of their job. These pilots often hover for long stretches over breaking news scenes, requiring a level of skill and focus that goes beyond typical flight operations.

What Comes Next In The Investigation

The NTSB’s investigation is still in its early phases. Officials plan to move the wreckage to a secure location for further analysis, and they’ll continue gathering witness statements along with any additional video footage from bystanders in the area.

Typically, a preliminary report from the NTSB comes out within roughly a month, though figuring out the actual probable cause of a crash like this can take much longer.

Meanwhile, in a related development, 36-year-old Bailee Lynn Rios of Simi Valley has been identified as the driver of the SUV that witnesses say slammed into the Metro bus at high speed just before the helicopter crash occurred. She now faces murder charges in connection with that earlier collision.
