Lynette Hooker Case: Missing Michigan Woman May Have Returned to Sailboat Before Vanishing

Missing Michigan Woman Lynette Hooker May Have Reached Her Sailboat, Source Says

New questions are emerging in the case of missing Michigan woman Lynette Hooker, who vanished in the Bahamas earlier this year. According to a source close to the family, Coast Guard investigators are now exploring the possibility that she did not fall overboard from a dinghy, as her husband has claimed, but may instead have made it back to the couple’s sailboat before disappearing. That scenario would directly contradict the account her husband gave authorities.

A Disappearance Under Scrutiny

Lynette Hooker, 55, was reported missing by her husband, Brian Hooker, on April 5. From the beginning, his version of events centered on a nighttime dinghy ride gone wrong.

According to Brian Hooker, the couple had taken the dinghy out from Elbow Cay and were returning to their sailboat, the “Soulmate,” which was moored off Hopetown. The vessel had served as their base for traveling around the Bahamas. He claimed that Lynette “bounced off” the dinghy while holding its keys and was swept away by rough waters, leaving him to paddle back to shore alone.

Her body has never been recovered.

A Competing Account Emerges

CBS News learned on Thursday that U.S. authorities have told Lynette Hooker’s family members she may have actually returned to the Soulmate before she disappeared. If accurate, this would sharply conflict with her husband’s story.

Investigators are pursuing more than just the question of whether she made it back to the boat. According to the source, U.S. Coast Guard investigators are also trying to determine whether a physical altercation took place aboard the sailboat. That line of inquiry adds a serious new dimension to a case that had initially been framed as a tragic accident at sea.

Where Things Stand for Brian Hooker

Brian Hooker has not been charged with any crime and firmly denies any wrongdoing. In the aftermath of his wife’s disappearance, he was briefly detained by Bahamian authorities before being released and permitted to return to the United States.

Shortly after Lynette vanished, he spoke with CBS News and described their time sailing together in glowing terms, calling the experience “fantastic” and saying the two were “more like co-captains.”

The Physical Evidence Under Examination

Investigators have been gathering and analyzing key evidence tied to the couple’s travels. The timeline of seizures includes:

  • The Soulmate, which the Coast Guard seized in May roughly 40 nautical miles off Florida’s coast.
  • The dinghy, which Coast Guard investigators seized separately in the Bahamas in June.

Evidence recovered from the sailboat has since been sent to an FBI facility in Quantico, Virginia, where it is being analyzed by investigators briefed on the case. That forensic work could prove pivotal in determining what truly happened.

The Bottom Line

The case of missing Michigan woman Lynette Hooker has shifted from a presumed overboard accident to an investigation weighing whether she returned to the sailboat and whether a confrontation occurred there. With her body still missing, both vessels seized, and evidence under analysis at Quantico, authorities are working to reconcile the conflicting accounts. For now, Brian Hooker remains uncharged and maintains his innocence, while the search for answers in his wife’s disappearance continues.
