Protests Erupt in Ukraine Over Ousted Defense Minister as Parliament Votes on New Government

The controversial Ukraine defense minister dismissal has sparked rare wartime protests across the country, throwing a spotlight on President Volodymyr Zelenskiy’s leadership at a delicate moment in the war against Russia. As lawmakers prepared to vote on a new government, hundreds of citizens took to the streets to demand answers over the ousting of Mykhailo Fedorov, the popular reforming defense minister. The turmoil has raised questions about the stability of Kyiv’s leadership just as its military effort hangs in a precarious balance.

A Dismissal That Sparked Outrage

At the heart of the unrest is Zelenskiy’s decision to exclude Fedorov from his cabinet. The move marks the president’s second cabinet shake-up in a single year, and it has generated significant public anger.

Fedorov, a 35-year-old tech expert, had earned widespread admiration for his efforts to transform Kyiv’s outmanned army into a more efficient fighting force. His removal struck a nerve with many Ukrainians who viewed him as a symbol of progress and modernization.

Rare Protests in Wartime

The dismissal triggered a response seldom seen during wartime. Hundreds of people took to the streets in Kyiv and other Ukrainian cities, demanding an explanation for the decision.

The demonstrations were notable not just for their size but for their timing, as public protests are rare while the nation remains locked in conflict with Moscow. The outpouring of frustration signaled just how deeply the decision had resonated with the public.

The Proposed New Government

As the protests unfolded, attention turned to the shape of the incoming government. Under the proposal, energy executive Sergii Koretskyi would lead the new cabinet.

The plan would see current interior minister Ihor Klymenko replace Fedorov as defense minister, a move that has shaken confidence in Zelenskiy’s wartime leadership. Fedorov himself confirmed on X late Wednesday that his tenure was ending, though Zelenskiy had not yet publicly commented on the decision.

As lawmakers began debating the proposed government, Koretskyi was expected to win approval in a vote later in the day. However, the fate of other ministerial appointments appeared far less certain.

A War Effort at a Critical Juncture

The political upheaval comes at a pivotal moment for Ukraine’s military campaign. In many respects, Kyiv finds itself in its strongest battlefield position since late 2022.

Ukrainian forces have been striking Russia’s oil sector and military logistics through drone and missile attacks that have weakened Moscow’s war machine. Yet significant challenges remain, including:

  • Grinding Russian advances in the east
  • A critical shortage of ground troops
  • A lack of air defenses as Moscow intensifies its ballistic missile strikes

This combination of momentum and vulnerability makes the timing of the leadership shake-up especially fraught.

A Wave of Resignations and Criticism

The decision to remove Fedorov has prompted both sharp criticism and consequential departures. Vitalii Sych, chief editor of the Ukrainian outlet NV, offered a pointed assessment, acknowledging that Zelenskiy behaves like a hero in difficult moments but arguing that such moments are often the result of his own poor decisions.

The fallout extended into the military ranks as well. Pavlo Yelizarov, a deputy commander of Ukraine’s air force and a key figure in drone warfare, announced his resignation on Thursday in direct response to Fedorov’s dismissal. He described the move as a great evil for Ukraine’s defense, underscoring the depth of discontent within the armed forces.

Demonstrations Outside the President’s Office

The epicenter of the protests was outside Zelenskiy’s own office in Kyiv, where more than 1,000 demonstrators gathered. The crowd chanted “Shame!” and carried placards bearing pointed messages such as “For what?” and “The Russians are celebrating.”

The scene evoked memories of major protests the previous July, when public outcry had forced Zelenskiy to reverse an unpopular measure that stripped anti-corruption agencies of their independence.

One protester, who identified himself as Ali, captured the sentiment of many. He described Fedorov as an effective and modern manager, insisting that the country favored an upgrade rather than a downgrade. He pointed to visible results and clear progress in Ukraine’s fight for freedom. Notably, some demonstrators redirected their frustration, demanding that Zelenskiy remove top general Oleksandr Syrskyi instead.

Zelenskiy’s Justification

For his part, Zelenskiy has framed the shake-up as a necessary renewal. He announced the changes to widespread shock on Sunday, arguing that both the government and law enforcement agencies needed refreshing.

Fedorov’s record made the decision all the more surprising to his supporters. Having previously served as Ukraine’s first digital transformation minister, he was credited with cutting bureaucracy, boosting drone warfare, and pursuing a data-driven strategy designed to exhaust Russian forces.

The Tensions Behind the Decision

Beneath the surface, the dismissal appears rooted in deeper conflicts. Supporters suggest that Fedorov’s attempts to clean up defense procurement had angered parts of the establishment.

He also faced criticism on other fronts, including accusations that he failed to deliver quickly enough on his pledge to reform recruitment. On Wednesday, Zelenskiy told reporters that he expected the defense ministry and military leaders to work with greater unity, appearing to confirm speculation that tensions had developed between Fedorov and top generals.

For now, it remains unclear whether Fedorov will be offered another position within the government.

What Comes Next

As Ukraine navigates this moment of political turbulence, the outcome of the parliamentary votes will help determine the shape of the country’s wartime leadership. The approval of Koretskyi seems likely, but the uncertainty surrounding other appointments reflects the broader unease gripping Kyiv.

The protests, resignations, and public criticism together paint a picture of a nation grappling with difficult questions about its direction, even as it continues to fight for its survival. Whether Zelenskiy’s gamble on renewal strengthens or destabilizes Ukraine’s war effort may not be clear for some time.

For now, the streets of Kyiv have spoken, and the message is one of concern. As the country balances battlefield momentum against internal division, the fate of its government, and the leaders who guide its defense, remains very much in the spotlight.
