The Timber Fire burning in Monterey County has expanded to 1,723 acres with containment holding at just 5 percent, prompting authorities to widen evacuation orders across sections of Big Sur. Crews are now concentrating their effort on a single strategic objective: keeping the flames from crossing Highway 1.

CAL FIRE issued the updated acreage figure in a midday incident report Monday. Only hours earlier, the fire had been listed at a fraction of that size.

A Fire That Doubled, Then Doubled Again

The growth curve tells the story better than any single number.

The blaze was measured at 180 acres early Sunday. By evening it had reached 400. Monday morning brought a figure of 800 acres. By midday that had climbed to 1,330, and the afternoon update pushed it to 1,723.

Containment has moved in the opposite direction from what firefighters wanted. Crews reported 20 percent containment late Sunday afternoon, but that figure was revised down to 5 percent later the same night. Officials have not publicly explained what prompted the reduction.

The U.S. Forest Service, serving as lead agency, places the fire’s start at roughly 9:38 p.m. Saturday. It is burning southeast of Loma Vista within the Los Padres National Forest.

Terrain Is the Central Obstacle

Steep, rugged country is what makes this fire so difficult to fight.

The Forest Service described terrain that continues to obstruct firefighter access and hamper suppression work. CAL FIRE Incident Management Team 1 was requested to help manage what officials called a rapidly evolving incident.

There is some encouraging news buried in the technical detail. Crews reported the fire moving at a slow rate of spread through grass, brush and oak woodland, and critically, it has not climbed into the treetops. A ground fire remains far more manageable than a crown fire, which can advance at devastating speed and throw embers well ahead of the main front.

Even so, spotting was observed Sunday evening as the fire pushed through heavy fuels in remote country.

Aircraft have been working the blaze extensively, dropping water and retardant on active sections while ground crews attempt to reach areas vehicles cannot access.

Who Must Leave Now

The Monterey County Sheriff’s Office issued immediate evacuation orders at 11 p.m. Sunday, accompanied by a blunt instruction to leave immediately.

Orders apply to zones MRY-F025, MRY-F026, MRY-F027 and a portion of MRY-F028. The Ventana Inn falls within the evacuation order area.

Evacuation warnings remain active for zones MRY-F023, MRY-F024 and part of MRY-F028.

The distinction between the two matters:

• An evacuation order means there is an immediate threat to life and property. Residents should leave with family members, pets, emergency supplies and essential documents.
• An evacuation warning means conditions could deteriorate. Residents should pack a go-bag, gather important items, and arrange transport for pets and larger animals.

Anyone who needs additional time or assistance to evacuate is urged to begin preparing immediately rather than waiting for an order.

Where Evacuees Can Go

Monterey County partnered with the American Red Cross to open an evacuation shelter at Carmel Middle School, 4380 Carmel Valley Road in Carmel. It opened at 7 p.m. Monday and will remain available until evacuation orders are lifted and residents can safely return.

The shelter provides food, drinking water, cots, blankets and comfort kits, with Red Cross and county personnel on hand to assist.

The SPCA for Monterey County is stationed there with a dedicated area for evacuees arriving with pets. Residents bringing animals are encouraged to pack pet food, medications, leashes and carriers where possible.

County Communications Director Nick Pasculli said the priority is ensuring affected residents have somewhere safe to go and the support they need while orders remain active.

A Temporary Evacuation Point has also been established at the Big Sur Station Multi-Agency Facility, operating through Thursday from noon to 7 p.m. or until orders lift. The site offers comfort kits, water and snacks from the Red Cross, and gives evacuees a place to gather, receive incident updates, obtain resource referrals and request sheltering assistance in person.

The Highway 1 Question

State Route 1 is currently open through the Big Sur area according to the most recent official update.

That said, motorists are strongly encouraged to stay away. Emergency vehicle traffic has increased substantially, and drivers who wander into active firefighting zones create hazards for themselves and for crews.

There is some ambiguity in the public information. An earlier report indicated the highway was closed between Point Sur Lighthouse and Partington Canyon. The latest update does not address whether that closure was lifted or how conditions changed. Anyone planning travel through the corridor should verify status directly before setting out.

Damage So Far

As of Monday’s update, CAL FIRE listed no structures damaged or destroyed and no injuries or fatalities among civilians or firefighters.

That record reflects both the fire’s remote starting location and the speed of the evacuation response.

The cause remains under investigation.

What to Watch

Three factors will determine how the next several days unfold.

Weather is the first. Wind shifts can change a fire’s direction faster than crews can reposition, and aviation support depends on conditions permitting flight.

The Highway 1 line is second. Holding that boundary protects structures and keeps a critical evacuation route usable.

Fuel behaviour is third. As long as the fire stays out of the canopy, crews retain a meaningful chance to build containment. If it climbs, the calculation changes quickly.

Officials say they will continue issuing updates as conditions develop.
