Third Immigration-Related Death in a Week: Man Killed by Semi After Fleeing ICE Agents in Florida

Immigration enforcement death Florida has once again thrust federal immigration operations into the national spotlight, after a man was struck and killed by a semi truck while fleeing agents on Tuesday morning in St Augustine. The tragedy marks the third death in a single week connected to immigration enforcement, deepening a wave of public outrage already building against ICE and the Department of Homeland Security.

What Happened in St Augustine

According to a Florida highway patrol spokesperson, the death occurred during an encounter with federal immigration officials. Agents with Homeland Security Investigations (HSI), a component of Immigration and Customs Enforcement, confronted four men sitting in a vehicle in the parking lot of a convenience store along a busy road.

As the men fled from the agents, one of them ran into the heavy traffic and was struck by a semi truck. He died at the scene. Master Sgt Dylan Bryan of the Florida highway patrol said the pedestrian was hit by the tractor trailer in the right lane and sustained fatal injuries. He added that the truck immediately stopped and its driver attempted to render aid to the victim.

The Department of Homeland Security later confirmed that the man who died was a Mexican national. In a statement, a DHS spokesperson said law enforcement had conducted an operation near St Johns, Florida, and that Florida highway patrol and HSI were investigating the incident, promising further updates when available.

Unanswered Questions

Key details about the incident remain unclear. The DHS statement did not specify whether the man who died was the actual target of the agents’ operation.

There are also indications that additional federal agencies may have been involved. According to a homeland security source, Border Patrol officials may have been present at the scene, and an image from the crash reportedly shows a Border Patrol vehicle at the site.

The fate of the other three men involved in the encounter is likewise uncertain. It remains unknown whether they fled the scene or were taken into custody. The New York Times, which first reported the death, identified the victim as a 28-year-old man whose identity has not yet been released.

A Deadly Week for Immigration Enforcement

The Florida death did not happen in isolation. It comes amid a period of intense scrutiny for ICE and DHS, following two fatal shootings in the span of a week that have fueled mounting public anger.

The recent deaths include:

  • Johan Sebastián Durán Guerrero, a 26-year-old Colombian immigrant, who was shot and killed by an ICE official on Monday morning during an attempted arrest.
  • Lorenzo Salgado Araujo, who was shot and killed by ICE officials in Texas last week as agents tried to arrest him and his coworkers on their way to work.

Together, these three deaths in seven days have pushed public backlash against the agencies to a fever pitch.

A Shift in Tactics

The timing of the Florida death is especially significant given recent changes in enforcement strategy. In the wake of the Texas and Maine shootings, ICE announced it was pausing vehicle stops, a decision aimed at addressing the growing controversy surrounding its aggressive tactics.

The St Augustine incident, though not a shooting, adds another layer to the debate over how immigration enforcement operations are carried out and the risks they pose to those being pursued.

How the Scene Unfolded

Local response to the crash was swift. On Tuesday morning, local news outlets and the St Johns county sheriff’s office reported that a pedestrian had been struck on the highway, located about 35 miles south of Jacksonville. The local fire department was the first to respond to the scene.

In the aftermath, the St Johns county sheriff’s office and Customs and Border Protection, which oversees the Border Patrol, both referred all questions to ICE, underscoring the agency’s central role in the unfolding controversy.

The Bigger Picture

As the investigation continues, the death in Florida stands as a stark reminder of the human cost tied to intensifying immigration enforcement. With three lives lost in a single week and public anger surging, ICE and DHS face growing pressure to account for their methods. For now, the identity of the man who died remains unknown, but his death has already become part of a larger and increasingly urgent national conversation about how immigration laws are enforced and at what cost.
