Family of Nolan Wells to Inspect His Cellphone With DA as Investigation Deepens

The Nolan Wells death investigation has taken a significant step forward as attorneys for the family of the Black teenager, who died following a July Fourth boat trip off the Mississippi coast, announced they will work with local prosecutors to examine the contents of his cellphone. The decision marks a rare instance of cooperation between a victim’s family and law enforcement, and it comes as questions surrounding the young man’s death continue to mount.

A Case Full of Unanswered Questions

Nolan Wells vanished during a trip to an island off the Mississippi coast, and his death has since sparked widespread concern and speculation. His family has raised a series of troubling questions about both the circumstances of his death and the investigation that followed.

Among their most serious allegations is the claim that messages appeared to have been erased from his phone before it was returned to them. That concern, along with several others, has fueled the family’s insistence on a thorough and impartial inquiry.

A Meeting With the District Attorney

On Wednesday, the family sat down with District Attorney Angel Myers McIlrath, primarily to discuss how the investigation would proceed. According to attorney Ben Crump, the meeting yielded an important commitment: McIlrath agreed to present the completed investigation to a grand jury.

Efforts to obtain comment from the district attorney’s office were not returned. Still, the family sees the promise of a grand jury review as a meaningful development in their pursuit of answers.

Hopes for an Impartial Grand Jury

Crump expressed hope that presenting the case to a grand jury would ensure a fair process, with all relevant witnesses and evidence brought forward. He emphasized that the family’s skepticism is rooted in lived experience.

He spoke candidly about the need to question everything, including the roles of everyone involved and that of law enforcement itself. That instinct, he explained, reflects the reality of being Black in America.

Legal experts note that this path is standard practice in the state. Ronald Rychlak, a law professor at the University of Mississippi, explained that most felony cases in Mississippi go before a grand jury. Such a panel typically includes between 15 and 25 citizens who review the prosecutor’s evidence and decide whether there is sufficient basis for an indictment.

What Happened on Horn Island

The events leading up to Wells’s death remain murky. He had traveled to Horn Island, located about seven miles offshore, with a group of friends. However, when they departed around 3 p.m., he did not leave with them.

Conflicting accounts have emerged about why he stayed behind. Some suggest he intended to remain on the island to talk to a girl, while others indicate he had planned to return with his friends.

A few details help paint the picture of the location:

  • Horn Island is roughly 11 miles long and sits near the Alabama state line.
  • It is uninhabited and can only be reached by boat.
  • The island is a popular spot for parties and gatherings.

Wells’s mother reported him missing shortly after midnight on July 5. The following day, boat and rescue crews launched a search, and his body was later recovered from the waters near the island.

A Death That Has Galvanized a Community

The circumstances of Wells’s death have drawn intense attention online, with many people connecting the case to Mississippi’s history of racial tension and the broader experience of being Black in a majority-white space.

The family and their attorneys have pointed out that, based on photos and videos from the Fourth of July celebration, where nearly 200 people had gathered, Wells was one of very few Black individuals present. Adding to the national attention, the Congressional Black Caucus joined the growing calls for an independent investigation.

Authorities Say No Foul Play Suspected

For their part, officials with the Jackson County Sheriff’s Department and other agencies moved quickly to state that they did not suspect foul play. However, the results of an official autopsy are still pending, and the investigation remains ongoing.

Both the family’s attorneys and sheriff’s investigators have appealed to witnesses and anyone with video footage from the island to come forward, hoping to piece together the moments before Wells disappeared.

Wells, who would have turned 19 the following month, attended Southwest Mississippi Community College, where he played wide receiver on the football team. His family has pushed for a deeper investigation, noting that he knew how to swim. They have also questioned why his friends would leave him behind while taking his keys and phone.

Lingering Questions About the Phone

The cellphone remains a focal point of the family’s concerns. Relatives retrieved the device from the home of one of Wells’s friends on the evening of July 4, using a locator app to track it down.

According to the family, Wells was an avid Snapchat user, yet there were no posts or messages from roughly the 24 hours before they recovered the phone. Crump had previously said he intended to hire an expert to determine whether any data could be recovered from the device or from social media, and he confirmed Wednesday that this process would now move forward in cooperation with the prosecutor’s office.

Rychlak noted that this kind of mutual evidence inspection between police and a victim’s family is unusual. He explained that evidence is typically secured rather than shared, but added that cooperation between the two sides could help speed up the investigation.

Support From Public Figures

Wells’s death has resonated well beyond his community, drawing support from several prominent figures. Actor and producer Tyler Perry is helping cover the cost of the funeral. Former NFL quarterback Colin Kaepernick is assisting with the expense of an independent autopsy, and filmmaker Spike Lee attended a news conference last week to stand with the family.

Celebrating a Life

Amid the grief and unanswered questions, Wells’s mother, Christine Wonsley, shared that the family wants Monday’s funeral to be a celebration of her son’s life rather than a somber occasion.

She said he would not have wanted them sitting around crying, and so instead they plan to throw a party in his honor — a fitting tribute to a young man whose death has moved so many.

As the investigation continues, the family’s cooperation with the district attorney and the promise of a grand jury review offer a path toward the answers they have been seeking. For now, they wait, holding onto the hope that a fair and thorough process will finally bring clarity to the mystery of what happened to Nolan Wells.
