The Idaho In-N-Out shooting in Twin Falls left three people dead and seven others wounded on Saturday afternoon, according to a city spokesman, transforming an ordinary lunch rush into a scene of panic and grief. What began as a routine weekend at a newly opened burger restaurant ended with families sprinting across a parking lot, strangers pulling one another into cars, and emergency crews converging on one of the busiest shopping areas in the region.

The violence unfolded at roughly 2 p.m. local time, a moment when the plaza surrounding the restaurant was packed with shoppers and diners. Josh Palmer, public information officer for the city of Twin Falls, confirmed the casualty figures and said several of the injured were in critical condition when they were transported for treatment.

What Investigators Have Confirmed So Far

Officers who arrived at the scene located the body of the man believed to have carried out the attack in an area close to the restaurant. Palmer said he could not immediately clarify whether the suspect’s death was counted among the three fatalities reported.

Twin Falls Police Chief Matthew Hicks addressed reporters earlier in the day and acknowledged that basic questions remained unanswered, including who the gunman was and what pushed him to open fire. Hicks described the response as unfolding in extremely disordered conditions but offered one measure of reassurance to residents: officials no longer believe an ongoing danger exists in the community.

Authorities held back the identities, ages, and other personal details of those killed and wounded while relatives were still being contacted. Palmer said detectives were working through a long list of witnesses, a process complicated by the sheer number of people who happened to be nearby when the gunfire started.

Eyewitness Accounts Describe a Sudden Burst of Violence

Among those who saw the attack begin was 34-year-old Lane Koehn, who had stopped at a traffic light close to the restaurant. He described watching an individual carrying an AR-style rifle come out of the drive-thru lane. Moments later, another man armed with a handgun began shooting in the direction of the attacker.

Koehn then witnessed something he said he will not forget: a worker in an In-N-Out uniform hauling a colleague, also in uniform, across the asphalt. The woman had been shot in the chest and was bleeding heavily. Koehn, the man with the pistol, and the employee remained beside her until medics reached the scene. He said afterward that her condition looked severe and that he could only hope she survived.

Police soon ordered him to clear the area because the situation was still considered active. By his count, the shooter discharged at least three or four rounds, and he saw nothing to suggest that any specific individual had been singled out.

A driver passing on the opposite side of the road recorded video of a man dressed in dark clothing approaching a white sedan while holding a long rifle. In the recording, the man opens the driver’s side door, releases the trunk latch, walks around the vehicle, and reaches inside the trunk. The person filming drove off immediately, worried that the man was retrieving additional firearms.

Diners Caught in the Middle

Haley Dodaro, a 43-year-old Twin Falls resident, had arrived with her mother for a late lunch. Sitting in the drive-thru queue, the pair noticed people sprinting across the roadway and employees rushing out of the building. Her first assumption was a kitchen fire. That changed when a man wearing a reflective vest and directing traffic told them a shooter was on the property.

Describing the moment in a text message, Dodaro said the realization was terrifying, with people fleeing in tears and shouting as they ran.

Inside the restaurant, 40-year-old Nayeli Rodriguez of Burley was waiting on an order with her daughters when the sound of gunfire reached them from the kitchen area. A staff member shouted that a shooting was underway and instructed customers to drop to the floor. Rodriguez said an older customer positioned himself protectively around her and her children, and their group was among the final ones to escape through the doors.

She recounted running as far from the building as possible before a group of strangers opened their car and let the family inside. She described them as angels and said she abandoned her own vehicle in the lot.

A Restaurant Barely a Week Old

The location had been serving customers for only about eight days, having opened its doors on July 24 as part of the chain’s push into Idaho. The arrival of In-N-Out in the state had drawn considerable enthusiasm, with long lines a regular sight since launch day, which helps explain how crowded the site was when the shooting occurred.

Emergency Response and Community Impact

Several of the wounded were rushed to St. Luke’s Magic Valley Medical Center. Hospital representative Taylor Marschner issued a brief statement noting that staff were coordinating closely with police and emergency personnel throughout the incident.

Twin Falls is a community of roughly 56,000 residents, positioned about 130 miles southeast of Boise and around 75 miles north of the Nevada state line. It is the kind of place where a single afternoon of violence ripples outward quickly, touching neighbors, coworkers, and school families within hours.
