Trump Says Bill Pulte’s Intelligence Role Is Temporary as Search for Permanent Chief Begins

President Trump made clear this week that Bill Pulte, his controversial choice to serve as acting director of national intelligence, will not hold the post permanently. Speaking to reporters from the Oval Office on Thursday, the president said his administration is already interviewing other candidates to fill the role for the long term, even as Pulte temporarily oversees the nation’s intelligence apparatus.

A Temporary Appointment

Trump framed Pulte’s tenure as a short-term arrangement from the outset. He emphasized that the position is acting rather than permanent, suggesting Pulte himself would not want the job on a lasting basis. The president described him as a very smart guy with plenty of energy who would perform well, while reiterating that the administration was actively interviewing people and viewed Pulte as someone stepping in just to take it over for a little while.

A Pointed Remark About Elections

One comment stood out. Trump suggested that while Pulte leads the Office of the Director of National Intelligence, he might find out some things about what the president called rigged elections.

The remark carried added weight given recent events. Outgoing Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard attended an FBI search of an election center in Fulton County, Georgia, earlier this year, a county central to Trump’s 2020 loss to Joe Biden. That visit raised concerns, including among some Republicans, about the potential politicization of the intelligence community.

At the time, a spokesperson for Gabbard said both the president and then-Attorney General Pam Bondi had asked her to be present for the search of the elections headquarters. Trump reinforced that account, saying Gabbard attended at Bondi’s insistence.

Skepticism on Capitol Hill

Pulte’s selection has not been warmly received in Congress. He brings no known national security background to the role and, as head of the Federal Housing Finance Agency, had investigated Trump’s adversaries for alleged mortgage fraud. That résumé has unsettled lawmakers at a moment when tensions are already running high among Senate Republicans.

The friction has real legislative stakes. Republicans are pushing to extend the federal government’s surveillance powers, but Democrats have threatened to obstruct that effort if Pulte is the one overseeing the country’s intelligence agencies.

Trump Defends His Pick

Pressed on whether Pulte has the experience required to lead the nation’s intelligence operations, Trump leaned on a familiar argument. He insisted Pulte qualifies because he is smart, then drew a parallel to his own trajectory, noting that he himself was not greatly experienced in national security yet believes he has handled it well, a view he said many others share.

The president went on to praise Pulte as a person of high integrity who had done a phenomenal job running Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac.

What Comes Next

For now, the arrangement leaves the intelligence community under temporary leadership while the administration searches for a permanent director. Pulte’s stint may be brief, but Trump’s suggestion that he could uncover information about past elections, paired with lingering questions about the independence of the intelligence agencies, ensures the acting director’s time in the role will be closely watched. The outcome of the administration’s ongoing interviews, and how the Senate responds, will shape who ultimately takes charge of the nation’s top intelligence post.
