Indianapolis Rapper “Lil E” Killed in East Side Shooting

A Loss for the Local Music Scene

A man was killed in an east side shooting early on June 19, according to the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department (IMPD). The victim was identified by the Marion County Coroner’s Office as Eric D. Butler, a local rapper. The news that an Indianapolis rapper killed in the shooting was a familiar figure in the city’s music community has sent ripples through the local scene.

Butler, known to many fans as “Lil E,” had built a notable presence in the Indianapolis music world before his life was cut short.

What Police Have Confirmed

According to police, officers were called to the 200 block of S. Franklin Road around 2:25 a.m. There, they found Butler, 35, suffering from injuries consistent with gunshot wounds.

He was rushed to Eskenazi Hospital in critical condition but died shortly after arriving, police said. As of now, authorities have not released information about a possible suspect or the circumstances that led to the shooting.

A Prominent but Complicated Figure

Butler was widely recognized in the Indianapolis music scene under his “Lil E” moniker. Yet his life also intersected with the city’s troubled history of violence.

According to prior IndyStar reporting, Butler had at one point been connected to the so-called “Grundy crew,” a group authorities accused of operating a “violent” drug trafficking ring in Indianapolis back in 2015. Notably, prosecutors at the time failed to secure a single murder conviction against anyone associated with the group.

A Pattern of Violence

Disturbingly, this was not the first time Butler had been targeted. IMPD records show he was also shot on April 23 at an auto repair shop located less than a mile from where he was killed on June 19.

The proximity of the two incidents raises questions that investigators may seek to answer as they piece together what happened.

Part of a Troubling Trend

Butler’s death also follows another recent loss within the local rap community. Fellow Indianapolis rapper Cornell Davis, also known as Playbwoi Tha Great, was killed in a May 5 shooting at an apartment on the city’s east side.

The back-to-back deaths of two local artists underscore broader concerns about gun violence affecting the Indianapolis music scene and the community at large.

An Ongoing Investigation

With no suspect yet identified and the motive still unclear, the investigation into Butler’s death remains active. Authorities are expected to share more information as it becomes available.

For now, the loss of “Lil E” stands as another somber chapter for a community grappling with violence — and for fans mourning the death of an artist who left his mark on the local scene. This remains a developing story, and updates are likely as the investigation continues.
