A Kansas City shooting spree that left one person dead and four others wounded has triggered an urgent manhunt across the metro area, with police saying they are closing in on the suspect. Authorities have identified him as 22-year-old Oscar Sanchez-Munoz, who remains on the run as of the latest updates.
The violence, which unfolded across multiple locations Tuesday evening, has rattled the city even as it welcomes crowds for the World Cup.
Police Close In on the Suspect
The Kansas City Police Department named Sanchez-Munoz as the man suspected in the deadly rampage. During a Wednesday evening news conference, KCPD Chief Stacey Graves struck a confident tone, telling reporters, “we are hot on the trail” of the suspect.
She urged the public to act quickly if they spot him. “If you see this individual, please call the TIPS hotline, please call 911 immediately,” Graves said, stressing that police want him taken into custody as soon as possible.
A Deadly Evening Across the City
The spree appears to have begun with a fatal shooting and crash around 6:30 p.m. near Truman Road and Bennington Avenue, where a man was found shot inside a wrecked car.
According to police, between 6 p.m. and 6:30 p.m., officers received reports of four separate shooting victims at locations spread across Kansas City. The scenes stretched across major roadways, including:
- Near Interstate 670 and Wyoming Street
- Interstate 70 and Paseo Boulevard
- I-70 and Prospect Avenue
- Truman Road and Hardesty Avenue
Investigators noted a chilling pattern: all four victims said they were traveling east when their vehicles suddenly came under gunfire. The string of attacks along the highway corridor suggests the violence was both rapid and mobile, unfolding as victims drove through the area.
An Uber Driver Caught in the Crossfire
Among the most alarming details, KCPD said one of the victims was an Uber driver who had been shot while transporting fans to Arrowhead Stadium for Kansas City’s first World Cup match. Despite the attack, police were able to get those passengers to the stadium on time.
The victims ranged in age and severity of injury. Three adults and one teenager were taken to the hospital. The teen was last reported in stable condition. One adult suffered life-threatening injuries, while two others sustained injuries that were not life-threatening.
A Standoff and a Narrow Miss
The search for Sanchez-Munoz nearly came to a head Wednesday morning. Police became involved in a standoff at a home in Independence, near U.S. 24 Highway and Brookside Avenue.
The sequence of events played out across multiple agencies:
- Blue Springs police cleared the house at 8 a.m. before handing the residence over to Independence police.
- Despite the operation, Sanchez-Munoz was not found inside the home.
- At 10 a.m., Independence police turned the investigation over to KCPD.
- The vehicle believed to be involved in the shootings was discovered at the Brookside home.
While the suspect slipped away, recovering the vehicle gave investigators a significant piece of physical evidence to work with.
A Suspect Already Wanted
Sanchez-Munoz was not unknown to law enforcement before this week. Police say he already has an outstanding warrant for his arrest in Wyandotte County for aggravated assault, with bond set at $100,000.
That prior warrant adds urgency to the manhunt, painting a picture of a suspect authorities were already seeking before the deadly spree unfolded.
Reassurance Amid the World Cup
The timing of the violence is especially sensitive, coming as Kansas City hosts matches for the KC2026 World Cup, drawing massive crowds and international attention.
Chief Graves moved to reassure fans that they would remain safe during the tournament. She pointed to the heavy security already in place, noting that anyone attending World Cup events has seen the large law enforcement presence in and around the venues — and that those are only the officers visible to the public. Her message was clear: behind the scenes, even more resources are at work keeping attendees safe.
How the Public Can Help
With Sanchez-Munoz still at large, police are leaning heavily on the community for tips. Anyone who sees him or has information about his whereabouts is urged to act immediately rather than approach him.
Authorities ask the public to call 911 right away or reach the TIPS Hotline at (816) 474-8477. Tips can play a critical role in locating a suspect who has so far managed to evade a multi-agency search.
A City on Alert
For now, Kansas City finds itself balancing celebration and caution. The World Cup has brought energy and visitors from around the world, even as a deadly shooting spree casts a shadow over the festivities.
Police say they are confident they’re closing in, but until Sanchez-Munoz is in custody, residents and visitors alike are being asked to stay alert and report anything they see. The combination of a known suspect, recovered evidence, and an active multi-agency effort suggests the search may be entering its final stages — though the outcome now depends, in part, on the eyes and tips of the public.
