Russian Boxing Chief Says Trump Jr. Repaid Him for Wedding Costs, but Admits He Is Baffled Why

The Umar Kremlev Trump Jr. story took a new turn on Tuesday, when the Russian boxing chief confirmed that the president’s eldest son had paid him back for part of his Bahamas wedding celebrations, while saying he could not understand why. Neither side has offered any proof of a payment, so the claim rests on their word alone.

What Kremlev Said

Speaking at an International Boxing Association press conference in Istanbul, Kremlev said Trump Jr. had repaid the money he spent on the gift. He sounded puzzled by the gesture. Hosting someone, he argued, is like inviting a guest to your country house: you would not send them an invoice afterwards. Doing so, he said, would be ridiculous.

He played down the controversy, calling the event a shared occasion that people had blown out of proportion. He insisted the two men are simply friends united by a love of sport.

Who Paid for What

Kremlev heads the boxing association and was recently given the Order of Friendship by Vladimir Putin. Records reviewed by ProPublica indicate he covered hundreds of thousands of dollars in costs for the three-day wedding in May, when Trump Jr. married Bettina Anderson. The spending reportedly included renting one of two private islands used for the reception and guest stays, plus an elaborate fireworks show. The money reportedly came from a Dubai entity the association uses for financial transactions.

The Trump Family’s Response

After the report, President Donald Trump said the support was totally allowed, but that as he understood it, his son had paid the money back. He called such arrangements common and said he had hosted wedding parties for many people himself.

Bettina Trump described the couple’s wedding as attended only by family, and said Kremlev, a dear friend, generously hosted two nights of celebrations afterwards. She called it an extraordinarily generous gift for which they remain grateful. Her description of a gift sits awkwardly beside the claim of repayment, a tension that has not been explained.

Who Is Kremlev?

Born Umar Lutfuloyev, Kremlev served criminal convictions for extortion and battery in his twenties before changing his name and climbing through Russian sports administration with backing from senior security officials. After taking control of the association in 2020, he moved key operations to Russia and relied on Gazprom for funding. In 2023, the International Olympic Committee withdrew the body’s official recognition over governance concerns.

He and Trump Jr. have appeared together publicly, including at a sports event in September 2025. Kremlev’s office says they have never discussed politics.

The Wider Backdrop

The episode lands while Russia’s war in Ukraine continues, and it revives earlier scrutiny of Trump Jr.’s contacts with Russian figures, including his 2016 Trump Tower meeting with a Russian lawyer.

What to Watch Next

  • Whether any documents emerge showing a repayment
  • Further questions from lawmakers or journalists
  • Any additional details on the Dubai entity’s funding
  • How the White House addresses the gift-versus-repayment discrepancy

The Bottom Line

Both men now say money changed hands in one direction or the other, yet no evidence has been shown, and the accounts do not fully match. Until records appear, the story remains a question of who paid, who repaid, and why.
