Tigray Rebels Launch Major Offensive Against Ethiopian Government, Seize Regional Airports

Tigray offensive Ethiopia developments have escalated dramatically, as Tigrayan rebel forces seized control of airports throughout the Tigray region in northern Ethiopia and launched a coordinated offensive against federal forces in neighboring Afar and Amhara regions, according to officials on the ground.

Rebels Launch Coordinated Attack

Getachew Reda, an adviser to Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, confirmed early Wednesday that the Tigray People’s Liberation Front had launched an all-out offensive targeting government positions across both Afar and Amhara regions simultaneously.

In a post on social media, Getachew explained that TPLF forces had taken control of federally operated airports throughout Tigray, a move that immediately suspended all flights traveling to and from the region. He characterized the TPLF’s political and military leadership as having taken irresponsibility to unprecedented new heights through these actions.

However, the Tigray regional government offered a starkly different characterization of events, describing its actions as countering what it termed an invasion by federal forces rather than initiating an offensive itself. In a statement posted on Facebook, regional officials accused federal troops of conducting intensive bombardments Tuesday involving aircraft, drones, and artillery against Tigrayan positions. The statement indicated that Tigray’s army had been instructed to counter what it described as a genocidal invasion launched against the region, framing their military response as fundamentally defensive in nature.

Historical Context Behind The Conflict

The TPLF previously governed Ethiopia from 1991 until 2018, before being pushed to the political sidelines following Abiy’s rise to power, a shift that ultimately triggered a devastating civil war spanning from 2020 to 2022. That earlier conflict claimed approximately 600,000 lives according to African Union estimates, before the Pretoria Peace Agreement finally brought hostilities to an end.

Active Fighting Across Multiple Regions

By Wednesday, active clashes were already underway across various parts of Afar, including the towns of Abala and Erebti, according to reporting from AFP news agency, which cited humanitarian workers stationed in the region. Meanwhile, in Amhara, federal forces were reportedly firing heavy weapons from a military camp located in the town of Lalibela, according to Reuters, which cited two local residents who witnessed the fighting.

This latest offensive followed an announcement from the TPLF on Sunday revealing that it had formed an alliance with six other armed groups operating across Ethiopia, united by the shared goal of overthrowing Abiy’s government entirely.

A Complex Web Of Alliances

Reuters, citing both government and diplomatic sources, reported that Tigrayan forces were actively fighting alongside the Fano militia specifically within Amhara region. Fano represents another member of this new alliance formed with the TPLF, though its political trajectory has proven notably complicated. The militia had actually sided with federal government forces during the earlier 2020-2022 war, before ultimately rising up against that same government in 2023, initiating an ongoing armed conflict that has already resulted in thousands of additional deaths.

Abiy’s spokesperson, Billene Seyoum, told Reuters that members of this broader alliance had reportedly been collaborating for some time, allegedly receiving financial backing from Eritrea, Ethiopia’s neighboring country and historic adversary. Eritrea has consistently and repeatedly denied similar accusations regarding its involvement in Ethiopian internal conflicts.

Ethiopia’s President Responds At The UN

Speaking at the United Nations General Assembly in New York, Ethiopian President Taye Atske-Selassie Amde stated that his country had exercised immense restraint while making genuine progress with neighboring nations despite ongoing foreign interference in the region. He delivered a pointed message directed at what he characterized as forces of destruction and mayhem, urging them to respect the fundamental right of people throughout the Horn of Africa to live in peace and prosperity.

Analysts Warn Of Broader Regional Instability

Regional analysts have expressed serious concern that this renewed hostility could further destabilize an area that still hasn’t fully recovered from the previous devastating conflict. Approximately one million people remain displaced throughout the region as a direct consequence of the earlier war.

Alan Boswell, who directs Horn of Africa research at the International Crisis Group, warned that allegations regarding Eritrea’s backing of the TPLF could potentially trigger a much broader regional conflict extending well beyond Ethiopia’s borders. He noted that Eritrea maintains particularly close relationships with entities like the Sudanese army, even as relations between Ethiopia and Sudanese military forces have simultaneously been deteriorating. Boswell added that Ethiopia has also become increasingly involved in Sudan’s ongoing civil war, at least along their shared border region.

He characterized the overall situation as gradually becoming one large, interconnected regional crisis, warning that circumstances could deteriorate significantly further without meaningful de-escalation efforts from the various parties involved in these overlapping conflicts.
