Trump’s ‘American Flag Blue’ Reflecting Pool Fades to Gray After Costly Revamp

The Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool has become an unexpected source of controversy, as its recently drained surface reveals that the vibrant coating President Donald Trump once described as “American flag blue” has noticeably faded toward gray. What was meant to be a patriotic centerpiece ahead of the nation’s 250th birthday has instead turned into a costly and troubled project that continues to draw scrutiny.

A Faded Vision

On Wednesday, an Associated Press reporter and photographer observed the fenced-off reflecting pool from the top of the Washington Monument. The view told a striking story.

The new liner, which had been installed with much fanfare, now appears considerably grayer than it did when the pool was repainted and refilled with water in early June. Meanwhile, debris that had been visible earlier in the week following the draining had largely been cleared away by work crews.

The transformation from bold blue to dull gray stands as a visible symbol of a renovation that has not gone according to plan.

Ballooning Costs and Missed Deadlines

Trump’s effort to revamp the iconic landmark has been plagued with problems from the start. The project stretched well beyond his original goal of having the pool ready by the Fourth of July, in time for the country’s 250th anniversary celebration.

The financial picture has been equally troubling. What Trump initially suggested would be a modest undertaking spiraled well beyond expectations:

  • The president first estimated the renovations would cost around $1.5 million.
  • By June, the total bill had ballooned to more than $16 million.

That dramatic increase has fueled criticism about the management and execution of the entire endeavor.

Promises of Durability Fall Short

Trump had confidently claimed the repairs would last a century. Reality, however, painted a different picture almost immediately.

Within days of the project’s initial completion last month, the pool was hit by an algae bloom, and pieces of the newly applied coating appeared to peel away from the bottom. The rapid deterioration cast doubt on the quality of the work and the durability that had been promised.

The Contractors Behind the Work

Two companies were tasked with carrying out the renovation, each handling a distinct part of the project:

  • Ohio-based Green Water Solutions, also known as Greenwater Services, received a $1.7 million contract to install a water-purification system.
  • Virginia-based Atlantic Industrial Coatings was awarded $14.7 million to repaint and waterproof the pool’s concrete floor.

Together, these contracts accounted for the bulk of the project’s soaring costs.

Vandals or Shoddy Work?

At the center of the dispute lies a fundamental disagreement over what caused the coating to peel. Trump has repeatedly pointed the finger at vandals, while critics argue the problems stem from poor-quality repair work.

The president claimed, without providing evidence, that vandals had created a 350-foot gash in the liner and caused other damage. Yet during Wednesday’s viewing from the Washington Monument, no large slash marks were immediately visible. A closer inspection of the entire pool was not possible, however, due to a dark fence surrounding the perimeter.

Interior Secretary Doug Burgum, whose agency oversees the National Park Service, described the path forward in simple terms during an appearance with a conservative podcaster. Once the water was drained and debris from the Independence Day fireworks cleaned up, he said the plan was to repair the vandalism and refill the pool.

Legal Battles Over the Damage

The controversy has spilled into the courts. Records show that the National Park Service reported an incident on June 9 to the U.S. Park Police, alleging that a sharp knife or razor had cut the pool’s new liner.

Former Olympic canoe racer David Hearn pleaded not guilty last week in D.C. superior court to charges of deliberately damaging the reflecting pool. Hearn offered a very different account of events, saying he had reached into the pool to examine the peeling sealant and released a chunk of it only when instructed to do so by a park worker.

His attorneys, along with other critics of the administration, have characterized the case as an abuse of prosecutorial power. They maintain that Hearn is being made a scapegoat for the poor workmanship on the renovation.

He is not the only one facing charges. Court records indicate that at least three other individuals have been charged with misdemeanors for allegedly removing pieces of paint from the pool. All three pleaded not guilty during their initial court appearances.

Part of a Larger Vision for the Capital

The reflecting pool project represents just one piece of Trump’s broader ambitions to reshape the nation’s capital. He has spearheaded a number of high-profile initiatives across Washington.

Among the most prominent, he demolished the White House’s East Wing to make way for a $400 million ballroom. He has also announced plans to construct a towering arch between the Lincoln Memorial and Arlington National Cemetery.

A Symbol of Bigger Questions

The fading of the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool from “American flag blue” to gray has become more than just an aesthetic disappointment. It has evolved into a symbol of the challenges surrounding Trump’s rapid and expensive efforts to remake Washington’s landscape.

With mounting costs, missed deadlines, ongoing legal disputes, and visible signs of deterioration, the project raises broader questions about oversight and execution. As crews continue their work behind the dark fencing, the once-gleaming pool serves as a reminder that grand ambitions don’t always translate into lasting results.
