Trump’s New Reflecting Pool Paint Begins Peeling Away Amid Algae Troubles

A New Problem Surfaces

The saga surrounding the Reflecting Pool just took another unexpected turn. The freshly applied Reflecting Pool paint, a shade dubbed “American Flag Blue,” now appears to be peeling away from the bottom of the iconic landmark.

The development adds yet another complication to an already troubled renovation effort that has drawn public attention and no shortage of criticism.

How the Project Began

The bottom of the pool was painted at the direction of President Donald Trump and refilled with water roughly two weeks ago. The goal was to give the historic site a fresh, vibrant appearance.

However, things didn’t go as smoothly as planned. Shortly after the pool was refilled, the algae that blooms there every summer made its predictable return, turning the water a familiar shade of green.

Battling the Algae

In response to the algae problem, crews have been working hard to restore the pool’s intended look. Workers have been scrubbing away the algae and deploying nanobubble ozone technology in an effort to clean the water.

More recently, crews were spotted pouring hydrogen peroxide into the pool as part of the ongoing cleanup. Despite these efforts, the results have been mixed, with portions of the pool still struggling to maintain their fresh blue color.

The Paint Starts Lifting

On Thursday, a new issue became impossible to ignore. Sections of the blue paint began lifting from the bottom of the pool.

About halfway down the south side, a stretch measuring roughly two to three feet appeared to be peeling near the pool’s edge. As the wind picked up, the loosened chunk rose above the water’s surface, tearing away from the bottom just a little more with each gust.

The visible damage quickly caught the attention of passersby, some of whom stopped to take a closer look at the unfolding situation.

Visitors React

The peeling paint left some onlookers questioning the quality of the work. Derek Amspaugh, who was visiting from Columbus, Ohio, paused to observe the damage and voiced his concern.

He noted that with millions of dollars being spent on the project, the public would reasonably expect to see high-quality results rather than paint already coming loose.

Others saw something more symbolic in the situation. John Ritter, a resident of Northern Virginia, suggested the peeling paint might serve as a fitting metaphor for broader challenges facing the current administration’s various projects.

Questions Over the Cost

The financial side of the renovation has also drawn scrutiny. While one visitor referenced a figure of $11 million, the Trump administration has stated that the cost of the renovation is closer to $14 million.

For a project carrying such a hefty price tag, the early signs of peeling paint have only intensified concerns about whether the work was done properly.

Unanswered Questions

At this point, the exact cause of the peeling remains unclear. It’s uncertain whether the hydrogen peroxide, the scrubbing of the algae, or the nanobubble technology being used played any role in the paint lifting away.

The combination of aggressive cleaning methods and freshly applied paint has raised questions about whether the two efforts may be working against each other.

A Pool Still in Transition

As of Thursday afternoon, the Reflecting Pool presented a mixed picture. Roughly a third of the pool appeared clean and blue, reflecting the intended look of the renovation.

The remaining portion, however, still showed the algae-green color that typically defines the pool during the summer months. The contrast served as a visual reminder that the project remains very much a work in progress.

What Comes Next

For now, crews face the dual challenge of controlling the persistent algae while also addressing the newly emerging paint problem. How officials choose to tackle the peeling remains to be seen.

As the cleanup continues, the Reflecting Pool stands as a high-profile example of how even well-funded renovation efforts can run into unexpected obstacles. Whether the latest setback proves to be a minor hiccup or a sign of deeper issues, only time will tell.
