US Charges India’s Most Notorious Gangster in Sikh Separatist Murder Case

The Hardeep Singh Nijjar killing, a case that once pushed India and Canada into one of their worst diplomatic crises, has taken a dramatic new turn. US authorities have charged jailed Indian gangster Lawrence Bishnoi and his alleged North American deputy with orchestrating the 2023 murder of the Sikh separatist leader, part of a sweeping international crackdown on India-linked crime networks.

The Charges Against Bishnoi

On Tuesday, US authorities formally charged Lawrence Bishnoi, along with his alleged deputy Satinderjeet Singh, with masterminding the killing of Hardeep Singh Nijjar in Canada. The 2023 assassination had severely damaged relations between Ottawa and New Delhi, and these new charges bring renewed international attention to the case.

Bishnoi, who has been described as India’s most notorious gangster, has been imprisoned in India since 2015. His alleged deputy, Satinderjeet Singh, who is also known as Goldy Brar, is believed to be on the run.

A Massive International Operation

The charges did not come in isolation. They formed part of a wide-ranging law enforcement effort spanning the United States, Canada, and Europe. In total, authorities charged 37 alleged members of three India-linked crime syndicates.

The accusations against these networks are extensive, covering a broad range of serious offenses, including:

  • Kidnappings
  • Racketeering
  • Extortion
  • Arms trafficking
  • Drug smuggling
  • Murder

US Attorney Bill Essayli announced the charges at a news conference, emphasizing the coordinated nature of the crackdown. He said that law enforcement across the US, Canada, Europe, and Asia was working together with a shared determination to target and dismantle these criminal organizations wherever they might operate.

Crime Networks Run From Behind Bars

One of the most striking revelations from the operation was how these syndicates were allegedly managed. According to US officials, two of the individuals charged ran their global criminal enterprises while still incarcerated in Indian prisons.

That detail underscores the reach and sophistication of the networks in question, suggesting that imprisonment did little to interrupt their operations. As of the announcement, all but 10 of those charged were reported to be in custody.

How a Single Murder Sparked a Diplomatic Storm

The federal indictment, unsealed in Los Angeles, alleges that Bishnoi and Singh ordered the shooting of Nijjar outside a Sikh temple in Surrey, British Columbia, on June 18, 2023.

Nijjar, a Canadian citizen, was a prominent advocate of the Khalistan Movement, which seeks to establish an independent Sikh homeland by carving out an ethno-religious state within India’s Punjab region. New Delhi had designated him a terrorist.

His killing quickly escalated into far more than a criminal matter. Canadian police had already charged four Indian nationals in connection with the murder before these latest US charges emerged.

The diplomatic fallout was severe. Then-Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau publicly stated that Canadian authorities were actively pursuing credible allegations linking agents of the Indian government to the assassination. India firmly rejected those allegations, and the dispute strained ties between the two nations for a considerable period.

The Bigger Picture

The new US charges reopen a case that sits at the intersection of organized crime and international diplomacy. What began as a shooting outside a temple in British Columbia has evolved into a sprawling investigation touching multiple continents and implicating criminal networks that allegedly operate across borders, even from within prison walls.

For India and Canada, the case remains a sensitive chapter in a relationship still working to recover. And with one key suspect jailed and another on the run, the pursuit of those responsible for the Hardeep Singh Nijjar killing appears far from over, promising further developments as authorities on multiple continents continue their coordinated push against these syndicates.
