The Great American State Fair became an unexpected point of political maneuvering this week after Pennsylvania’s two U.S. senators stepped in to guarantee their state would have a presence at the event. Their move came in direct response to Governor Josh Shapiro’s decision to keep Pennsylvania out of the celebration, setting up a notable display of bipartisan cooperation.
A Governor’s Decision Reversed in Spirit
When Governor Shapiro announced that Pennsylvania would sit out President Donald Trump’s Great American State Fair, it appeared the Keystone State might be absent from the high-profile gathering. The state’s senators, however, had other plans.
Republican Senator Dave McCormick and Democratic Senator John Fetterman crossed party lines to ensure their home state would not be left out. In a joint statement released Saturday, the pair revealed they had reached agreements with several Pennsylvania organizations to deliver what they described as a strong presence at the fair, which is being held on the National Mall.
The senators framed their effort as a matter of state pride, promising a showcase befitting Pennsylvania’s distinctive role in American history. Their language made clear they viewed the state’s absence as something worth correcting, regardless of the disagreement at the governor’s level.
Building a Coalition
Rather than rely on state government participation, McCormick and Fetterman assembled a coalition of business and agricultural groups to carry Pennsylvania’s banner. They coordinated the initiative alongside U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Brooke Rollins, bringing federal and local interests together.
The organizations joining the effort represent a broad cross-section of the state’s economy:
- The Pennsylvania Chamber of Business and Industry
- PennAg Industries Association
- The Pennsylvania Farm Bureau
- The National Federation of Independent Business
- The Pennsylvania Manufacturers’ Association
- The Manufacturer & Business Association
By drawing on these private and industry partners, the senators found a path to represent Pennsylvania without depending on the state administration’s involvement.
A Rare Show of Unity
What stands out most about the arrangement is the unlikely pairing behind it. McCormick and Fetterman sit on opposite ends of the political spectrum, yet they united around a shared goal of keeping their state visible on a national stage. Their collaboration offered a reminder that, on certain matters of local pride and economic interest, partisan divides can give way to common purpose.
With the coalition now in place, Pennsylvania is set to take part in the Great American State Fair after all, ensuring the state’s agricultural and business communities have a platform at one of the season’s most prominent events.
