Gunman and One Victim Dead, 10 Injured After Mass Shooting and Standoff in Midland, Texas

A Midland Texas mass shooting on Friday morning left one victim dead and 10 others wounded, before the suspected gunman was found dead following a tense, hourslong standoff with police, authorities said.

The violence unfolded in Midland, sending the West Texas city into chaos and prompting an extensive law enforcement response.

How the Morning Unfolded

Police were called to an active shooter report at around 8 a.m. local time. According to the Texas Department of Public Safety, the suspect—identified as 45-year-old Victor Mata Villarreal—allegedly opened fire on both bystanders and responding officers.

Villarreal, a resident of nearby Odessa, then barricaded himself inside an abandoned veterinary clinic. What followed was a prolonged standoff that stretched through the morning and into the early afternoon. Authorities said he was found dead inside the building around 12:30 p.m.

The Toll on Victims

The human cost was severe. Hospital officials reported the following at Midland Memorial Hospital:

  • Nine victims were brought in for treatment
  • Four were rushed straight into surgery
  • Five were admitted in stable condition and have since been discharged

The victims have not yet been publicly identified. The DPS confirmed that no law enforcement officers were injured during the incident.

A Suspect Already on the Run

Friday’s shooting was not Villarreal’s first violent encounter with police that week. He had been wanted for attempted capital murder of an officer, accused of firing multiple shots at police during a car chase on Wednesday.

After that chase, authorities said, he fled the scene and went into hiding. When officers moved to arrest him on Friday, he allegedly began shooting—setting off the deadly sequence of events that ended with his death.

A City in Mourning

The tragedy drew an emotional response from local leadership. At a news conference, Midland Mayor Lori Blong urged residents to come together in grief and support.

“I would really ask Midlanders to pray for the families of those who have been impacted, for the victims themselves, for the family of the one who is confirmed deceased,” she said.

As Midland begins to absorb the shock, investigators continue working to piece together exactly what led to one of the most violent mornings the city has seen—an event that began with a fugitive on the run and ended with multiple lives shattered.
